Thread Starter
I have 4Gb Corsair DDR2 Dominator 1066 installed and I know that windows xp 32bit only sees ~3.25gb of ram, but how come mine only recognizes 2.75gb? Specs are below. Thanks

Your GTX 260 uses more of the total RAM XP x86 can see. If you were to get another in SLI you would probably see around 1.8GB.

Will this affect my performance if it read 3.5gb instead? thanks

Not that much since 2GB is a lot for XP.

32-bit has a 4gb limit

usable RAM in 32-bit = 4gb - VRAM

so if your GPU has 1gb of VRAM, then you can only use about 3gb of your RAM

so technically, if you have no dedicated GPU, you can use all 4 gigs of RAM

As the others have stated, its because XP limits it to 4GB on 32bit. If you upgrade to Vista x64, you will be able to use all 4GB.

It's actually 4GB - Reserve Space - VRAM - RAM.

So technically, if you have no dedicated GPU memory, you can use 3.4-3.5GB of RAM in XP.

Why would a video card that is not integrated share the RAM? Out of curiosity, Thanks!

It doesn't share the RAM, it shares the physical address space which the CPU can actually talk to. Since you're running in 32-bit mode, that's 4GB. The video card gets mapped in there somewhere and shadows, or overlays, some of the RAM, so that addresses to that 1GB of address space go to the video card instead of the RAM.

It's time for 64-bit Windows. See the link in my sig.

Go into your bios and make sure that "memory remapping" is enabled. I was having the same problem on 32 bit windows.
