The server itself is from...

I sniped it on eBay for $30 bones.

I'm kinda considering this one..

http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-PowerEdge-7...item3cb9a4297f

Not too powerful, already has cd drive in place unlike some others, I guess I could find another scsi drive to put in there and give it a raid 1 to keep things.

Just for the 1U case, or for the case & components?
Why buy a 1U if you don't have a rack to put it in? Or do you? hmm.
I don't have a rack yet....

Either way, enterprise level equipment tends to have better lifetimes than that of home equipment. It's used, but I wouldn't want to spend a giant amount putting one in, so no matter what I get it would be used. The only thing I'm planning on getting is a 2nd 36 gb drive to make it raid 1, just in case a drive is bad. Found one on ebay already for $5.

That's a great find herkalurk, great idea. When I get closer I may do the same thing maybe.

That is a good price, no reserve I hope. Yeah P4 is plenty for SOHO use of Untangle. I tossed around the idea of RAID for Untangle, but figured backing up the config is enough for me. My server doesn't have a DVD drive at all. I'm just going to use my external to install.

If you find 1U's that cheap... I might pick one up myself.
Rather than use S478 hardware. Why not use LGA771/775 hardware.
Not to mention that server hardware usually lasts a bit longer than consumer grade hardware.

EDIT:

Would this be good?

Maybe just upgrade the CPU?

Looks good. No HDDs tho. You'd be fine with the processor. I ran Untangle on a P3 800Mhz for a long time.

I love Untangle, but I'm more familiar with pfSense.
Nonetheless, great software.
