Since you have a wireless modem/router you'd be better off using Untangle in bridged mode. If you used Untangle as a router it wouldn't protect your wireless network. Unless you have another wireless router to use as an access point.

The Spyware blocker actually works A LOT better than I would have expected!

Great Program all around!
Does it really run that well? I have those same specs on an old Optiplex GX150. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to run it! I'm running Endian right now, using like 85% of the memory but running great.

Anyone recommend Untangle over Endian? I'm actually thinking of just going pfSense.

Firewall distros are amazing

What is the lightest weight firewall OS that I can run as a rerouter? I can't run it in between the router and modem because they are the same hardware.

Lets pretend that I dont have wireless. How would I set it up then?

The main reason I would like to run Untangle is to help "speed" up my network and thats why I would like to ditch the router/modem.

Modem->Untangle PC->switch/Router with DHCP turned off->all other PCs.

You would also have to turn off DHCP on your modem.

Untangle doesn't not boost a network. What it does is basically route packets better than a normal router because it has more memory and faster processor. What it's really doing is making the router seem more transparent.

Think I got it.

EDIT: I still dont get it. I dont have a modem. I only have a routers with built-in modem.
So would this work:

Router_1 -> Untangle -> Router_2 (w/ DCHP off) -> PC

EDIT2: Fixed and working.

Thanks

Yeah im running around 85% on the memory as well.. But I believe most router software dedicate a lot of memory anyways... So its going to be hard to find a software that doesn't take up that much that has this much protection.

But being were running almost the EXACT same machine.. I say go ahead and try out untangle and tell us what you think.. That way will know if its better than Endian or not.

Thanks!

I may just go ahead and do that when I get a little bit of time on my hands.

Yeah, mine uses around 80% as well but never goes above 90%. It uses RAM to run the entire OS in memory plus all the packet info. The hard drive is really only used to boot and then store log files.

There are lighter distros that need only like 64MB. However, why use those if you have the hardware?
Once again...
