Prime95 failed on Q6600 @ 3.6ghz/1.425 - Page 3

MCP is your southbridge, it way doesn't need that voltage when you OC your CPU. Just leave the MCP to its default voltage. Really, kick up your CPU a notch and lower the SPP to 1.3V. NVidia chipsets tend to negatively impact your CPU overclock when upping volts on them past 1.45. NB OC'ing comes in when you significantly OC your memory. When you do that too you'll be welcomed to finding the sweetspot of having enough NB volts for your memory OC while not impacting your CPU overclock too much.

You have massive vdroop (the difference between the voltage set in the bios to what it really is in windows) and I'm guessing that you also have vdrop(a drop in voltage due to increased load). If you can get more stable voltages, then your overclock will be more stable.

There is a pencil mod to help both of these. Just use a pencil and draw on the marked parts Link

This should help alot.

Also, only the FTW editions have vdroop control.

i did the pencil mod and it worked like a charm! because of this mod, i lowered the vcore to 1.4375. Prime 95 ran well for 10 minutes until 1 core failed. Should i keep upping the vcore even though i did the pencil mod? temps never reached over 56°c

edit : at 1.45V, prime 95 is still running strong after 30 minutes, but the temp peaked at 70°C at one point. Is this considered very dangerous? How often can it reach this temperature during normal uses?

Hey, now that you have your vdroop and vdrop under control I highly suggest going back and redoing the whole overclock. Like find the minimum voltage where it will boot into windows and start stress testing.

I found that finding stability with vcore is extremely picky. With my 3.6ghz (1.28750vid), I booted at 1.35v and was stable at 1.3875v. At the next voltage up, I was not stable. I can pass prime for 12hrs+ @1.3875 but at 1.39375 it crashes in prime after an hour.

Since your voltages are now more stable, you may find what didn't work before will work now. Also, make sure that your tjmax is 90C not 100C, and in my opinion the temps you see with prime are higher than what you would see in real life situations. In prime I go up to 62C but in real life gaming/heavy usage I see a max of 56C.

i tried 1.387v on 3.4 and 1 core failed after about an hour, so i raised the vcore to 1.4 and left the cpu at 3.4ghz and it has been running fine for the past 7 hours. the temps rise up to 66°C max and that does not happen very often. Will it be stable if i leave it as is? 3.4 @ 1.4V w/pencil mod? Thanks
