GTA 4 Performance Gets Worse Over Time

Thread Starter
This is weird - when i first start gta 4, the performance is pretty good. Not great, but at least the framerates are fine. I usually play for an hour or so, and it seems like every time, the performance is suffering by the time i'm done.

Is there any explanation for that?

could your GPU's be overheating? I had a similar problem when I had SLI but not with GTA4

I can only say that in certain areas and in certain weather conditions the frames per second will be affected negatively or positively.

what do you mean by performance suffering? Are objects taking a long time to load textures? Is there a frame drop?

I find that sometimes when I'm playing games like crysis. On engines that look good at lower (or higher) fps. That the longer you're playing it your mind thinks the frame rate is dropping. But it's not. I actually thought the FPS was dropping until I used the benchmark feature in FRAPS and realized that it wasn't.

Is what I used to do was assign overclocks to key combination's and whan I saw the FPS drop I OC'd more... Real bad fix...

It could also be RAM. I'd think 2 gigs would be OK for GTA 4 but maybe it's jumping to page file (using the HDD as RAM Much slower).

EDIT: also as 45nm said depending on the effects that the game is using the FPS could be dropped. But if its dropping and staying dropped (even in situations that you've been before with better performance) then there's probably something else causing it..

Switching to page file usually causes stuttering, or that's what I've found in past experiences.

If you want to troubleshoot further. I suggest running the game on lower settings so it doesn't have to switch to the page file if it fills the RAM.

Best of luck.

personally i think it's because of 2 gigs ram and memory leaks, cuz I have the same problem.

You might not have enough RAM. Check RAM usage after an hour.

I've seen GTA IV take up or use 5.5GB's of ram.
