What are your load temps. Aren't these Phenom chips supposed to run cooler then Athlon X2 , Doesn't seem like your OCed either. That's a low voltage.

Its gotta be your HSF , make shure its installed properly and full contact with cpu and just ya make shure its seated correctly follow HSF installation guide. Try new thermal paste too. You should be @ 40c at least, without a OC with a 1.3ish voltage. gl,
i've reinstalled my CPU cooler 3 times with lots of AS5, then very little, now evenly spread across the area of CPU - with little or no difference on temps. my ambient temps are very low, GPU is 35C always (fan:40% idle, 60% gaming), but itts just the CPU that giving me trouble... i'm out of ideas now... even if i lap it the temps will drop 5C, but then maybe the chip is faulty...

I personally think you're freaking out. It's a 65nm chip with 125W TDP, mate. Do you really expect it to have the temps of a 65W dual?

my previous Athlon 4400x2 (Toledo) was 90nm 110W, & my current cooler dropped its temps by 10C. then i read other owners of 9950 having idle temps of 35-40C on stock cooler, obviously it makes me feel that i have some sort of problem here. all i'm trying to determine here whether my chip is faulty & needs RMA - i always find second life for my chips/hardware one way or another, but lifespan of this silicon running above 50C will gradually decrease. i dont have this attitude where i can buy another rig once my current one breaks - i want my hardware to last..

in fact i previously tried putting more than needed of AS5 thinking there could be a gap but still didnt see any difference
did you remove it and start with a fresh ammount?

You need to put that Silent Knight back in the box it came in and put it on e-bay and sell it for what you can get out of it. I have the Asus Silent Square and that thing looks so sweet in the case but its not a cooler. Its Eye Candy and you should get a Xigmatek 1283. or the OCZ vendetta or the Core Contact cooler or the Arctic Freezer 64 which is a 92 mm fan but its an awesome cooler and doesn't take up all the space. But for true cooling power I would go with the Xiggy.

Your chip is not faulty unless you want to throw away the whole lot of them. They all have a hump in them that is about 5 microns high. If you Take a digital picture of the top of the processor then Lap the processor you will drop your temp about 4 C. There is a video on lapping processors on YouTube. Watch the video and do what he says except start with 400 grit until your surface is flat then go up to 600, 800, 1000, 1500, and 2000 if you want that mirror finish. It is important to take pictures of the numbers on the top of your processor for future references so don't forget that step.

seriously man , its your cooler. Do you have the boxed cooler for your cpu ?
If you do, have you tried that ?

Get rid of that silent knight, go with the Xig 1283 you can pick one up for under $30. You should see a huge improvement.
