Quick hard drive question - Page 2

Go to the partition manager in vista (right click my computer and click manage, look for disk manager) and then format it through there. It should see it there. XP has the same option as well.

yeah, just for future reference, you have to right click on "My Computer"

and then click on manage. Then when the "Computer Manager" screen pops up,

you click on "Disk Management" and when that loads, if it is a brand new drive it will ask you to initialize. If not, then you will get a screen like this:

oh, and the problem wasn't that it wasn't formatted or linux/grub was installed, it was that the drive (being brand new whether it be OEM or Retail) had no MBR or partitions on it. It needed to be "initialized" (which is what windows calls it) for it to be of any use. The same would have needed to be done within linux using the "fdisk" command or gparted.

and from there you can change drive letters, format, shrink, expand, create, delete, etc. Good luck!

as for it being a tiger direct oem drive, it has nothing to do with the way its working. the only problem you have is that the drive does have a partition on it for windows to read the drive in my computer.

like i said, get a partition program and that should show the drive in the program and then you can make a partition and even format it if you want it too. main thing you need is a partition on the drive.

heres a link to Acronis Disk Manager Software. its a trial verison, but i think it might work for you.

again hope this works

Yeah what stumped said. Also, an easier way to format, IMO, is to use the WD Drive Diagnostics utility. DL it from WD's site and burn it to an ISO.

Please don't post if you don't know. This has NOTHING to do with it not being partitioned. You don't need to partition a drive for windows. Nor any operating system, (well, maybe sometimes linux for swap) it just needed to be formatted

wth are you smoking?!?!?!?! this has everything with the drive needing to be partitioned. The reason windows doesn't see the drive is because A) there is no partition on it (who here has bought a hdd from a store and had it come with a partition) and B) it had no mbr on it. So before you go saying that this has nothing to do with partitions, i suggest you get your facts straight before criticizing someone else who had it right.

and you have to have a partition first and foremost before you can format anything.

I realize that. What i'm saying is that you don't need to partition it BEFORE you go to install Windows. Windows installation will do that itself. So before you go flaming someone who has it right, check what he means by it.
