Sli 8800gt on 16x vs 8x

Thread Starter
my motherboard is sli capable and i have used sli before... but with a 7600gt. when sli is enabled the 1st pci-express card will run @ 16x and the second will run @ 8x. I currently have a 8800gt and would like to get another for sli, but i am skeptical as to weather or not i will use performance since the second slot will run @ 8x.

I have also been considering just getting a 8600gt for physx, but that idea is starting to lose steam.

please share your thoughts and/or results of any similar situations.
THANKS!!!

I just installed 2 8800's in SLI and I love it. It was definately worth it, and a pHsyx card dedicated isn't going to match the performance.

an 8x pci-e slot will slow you down by about 5%, imo you should go ahead with the sli as this a small loss for the amount of performance youll be gaining. Im running 9800 gt (8800gt) sli on dual 8x pci-e, dont have proof but has been stated many times on ocn

I saw it written on here (by a fairly credible source) that it is barely even noticable gaming with 2 X 8x rather than 2 X 16x until you start putting cards like the 4870X2 and GTX280s in there.

The 8X only slow down the 8800Gt if you play are large resolutions like 1900*1200 and over.

He has 8x PCIE 1.1 not 2.0. If he had 8x 2.0 he would be 100% fine 0 bottleneck.

thanks for all the quick responses
i think i will get another one for sli

BTW i am also getting a 24" LCD with 1920x1200 res... so i will need a performance boost for games like fallout 3, cnc3, crysis, mirror's edge (physx game)

does anyone know if you can use a pci physx card on top of sli... or would it not be worth it?

physx cards are almost dead considering most of the new graphics cards have then build in with the new 180.84 and 181.00 drivers. Almost a waste of money to get a physx card. What would be interesting is a 4870x2 and a physx card.

My board runs @ x16 and x8 when in SLI and i noticed no performance drop offs at all.

To see for yourself run a bunch of benchmarks on your 8800GT with it in the x16 slot, then run the same benchmarks again in the x8 slot and see if there is a performance difference.

I never noticed one but if there is one then this test will show it... but not only that it will show you how much performance the other card will lose when running @ x8.
