AMD x2 5600+ vs. Intel E8400

Thread Starter
After reading a couple of benchmarks, and comparing these two CPU's I decided to get some advice from you guys. Would getting an E8400 be that big of a step up from my current CPU as far as gaming goes? Benchmarks say so, but they only go so far. I would like a few more opinions on the matter.

Try oc'ing your 5600 more as you have a mild overclock.

IMO id get the Intel chip if your gonna overclock the tits off it, if your gonna leave it stock you might aswel stick with the 5600 as the extra performance from the Intel aint worth the money.
Well your 5600+ is a solid chip.
What kind of things do you like doing on your PC?
If you are a benchmarking person, hit the E8400, if real peformance rocks your boat, the E8400 wont be a massive leap.

Off Topic:You seem to have the same board as me, terrible overclocker isn't it?

Get the Intel if you wanna bench alot and oc like crazy. But as far as gaming I see no benefit, the 5600 should be fine.

As far as gaming is concerned, I saw little to no difference coming from my X2 @ 3.0GHz. For now, at least.

Thanks for all the replies! I mainly do a lot of gaming on my PC. But I also plan on upgrading my GPU at some point (torn between the 4870 and the GTX 260 ) and I don't want my CPU bottlenecking the card. I don't really overclock or do benches too much.

I was beginning to wonder whether it was Vista or the mobo that didn't like my OC's, lol. That's the main reason why I don't have it OC'ed that high.

I would say that your gfx will be the bottleneck part even if you have e8400, so in my oppinion investing in new cpu isn't that positive.

On other side, e8400 4.0Ghz and x with 3.0Ghz, yes...You'll see some difference in performance, but this won't be miracles.
Oc'ing e8400 with 8800GT made no differences past 3.5Ghz for me.

So am I correct in assuming that my CPU won't bottleneck a 4870 or a GTX260?

E8400 is a massive leap. I have a 5000+ Black Edition OCed to 3.1GHz and my E8400 just ran circles around (at stock) and then thrashed it into oblivion with a moderate OC.
