hmm. I didn't notice a big boost in gaming going from 5600+ at 3.3 to my quad at 3.6. What did give me a serious boost was upgrading my gpu .

You have been heavily GPU bottlenecked so you wouldn't have seen much difference. I had the same GPU with both CPUs and the difference was quite outstanding.

Upgrade the GPU first, if you feel there's a bottleneck then upgrade I feel your CPU can still hold it's own for a while. There aren't many games that max out CPUs... The only time I max mine is while rendering stuff in 3DS Max...

Gaming framerates are more determined by the graphics card, as long as its not bottlenecked (which won't happen with you unless you run triple SLI 280's).
Pick up a nice video card if the psu can feed it, and wait for the new i7's to become more affordable to common folk and do a rebuild then.
