DD-WRT As an Wireless Extender?

Thread Starter
I'm thinking of getting a cheap old linksys wireless router that runs DD-WRT to put upstairs with my computer to take the signal from my router downstairs and extend it so i can have a better signal with my computer upstairs

Is this possible?

Could I take the signal from downstairs (source) and increase the signal/strength with my dd-wrt linksys router upstairs so my xbox and computer get a better connection?

Yup it's possibe. Right now I have a WRT54g with dd-wrt running on it, that I just bought hooked to the ethernet port of my downstairs computer. This downstairs router is wirelessly bridged to the wrt54g that I have upstairs connected to the modem. Before when I was just using the wireless NIC, I would constantly lose the signal which was a pain for media streaming, but now it's all good.

And yes I've increased the signal strength on both from their default (which I think is 50mW) to 150 and 200mW.

Yes. Try to get a version 1 if possible they actually skimped on the hardware with later versions.

Extra firewall as well as more options than you can shake a stick at. Also you can OC! but I wouldn't unless you really need to.

There is no need to overclock a router. Unless you want networking trouble.
