Upgrade advice

Thread Starter
Guys,

I am currently running an AMD 3800 X2 and 2gb DDR ram with an ATI X1950XT GPU and a single 320GB WD HDD.

I have a 19"Wscreen.

I have been looking into upgrading my system. I mostly use it for CSS, browsing the net and itunes. Would the below spec see a decent increase in performance?

Intel C2D E8400
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Biostar TPower I45
2GB Corsair TwinX DDR2 1066 ram (TWIN2X2048-8500C5D)
2 x WD 320GB HDD in raid (WD3200AAKS)

I'll be running XP32 SP3 Home on the system.

I have found this for £390.

What do you think?

If it is mostly used for the things you mentioned, I don't really see much point in upgrading, honestly.

Itunes will load faster, you will have better performance in CSS, but both of those applications don't even really tax the system you have now.

If you did upgrade, those are really solid picks for the parts you chose. That is a great P45 Mobo, a great CPU, and fast ram. That should last you a long time if you decide to upgrade. Merry Christmas!!!

Cool. So you don't think it's really worth upgrading? Would I be better off buying a new GPU - ATI 4870 1GB and then waiting for i7 to become more affordable?

if you are into overclocking... that CPU/MOBO combo is KILLER! if you put some good ram with it you can get your e8400 from 3.0ghz to 4.0ghz no problem...

im actually stressing mine right now... 4.20ghz at a max of 60c at load... i have the zalman 9700 LED cpu fan...

but like he said. if thats all you need it for... not sure if its worth it yanno? if you do decide to get a new GPU and PSU then you want to make sure they are compatible... some of th newer cards might not work on your old mobo. you could prolly get off with a lower end vid card... but if you are bored and want a project and have the money to burn... choice is up to you

I'm just looking for a performance boost really. Have had this set-up for a long time and just want to see better frame rate in CSS and just generally a bit quicker..
What ram would you recomend with that Chip and Mobo?

Looks good but at 19" LCD, I would say a 4850 is fine.

The arctic freezer 7 pro is an ok heatsink, but see if you can find the OCZ Vendetta2, Xigmatek s1283 or the kingwin 12025 (same thing as the xigmatek) for around the same price. If you can the ones i listed are much better coolers that dont cost an arm and a leg. If you cant the AC7P will get you buy fine.
