Never run anything more powerful than a Pentium 386 without a heatsink + thermal paste.

In today's technology everything needs a heatsink almost, and with those heatsinks you need thermal paste to make a better path for heat transfer or hardly any of the heat will transfer.

I apply mine (Noctua NT-H1) to my Vendetta 2 by making 3 little lines of the paste on the heatpipes that are on the bottom like so:
