But you guys also realize that Nvidia's current memory at ~2.3Ghz DDR4 @ 512-bit bus (on the GTX280) is FASTER than ATI's 3.60Ghz DDR5 @ 256-bit bus (on the 4870), right?

I mean, progress is always a good thing and DDR5 is the next new thing. But don't be confused into thinking that Nvidia's use of slower memory makes it de facto inferior - there are two parts to the memory equation -- bus size and memory speed.

Are you saying that the ATi memory is slower due to the bus speed? If so then that dog has been kicked to death and proven to be otherwise.

Not to nitpick, but what you wrote isn't quite right.

1. Nvidia never used GDDR4.
2. If you are talking about the 280 GTX, the 512 bit bus and GDDR3 doesn't nearly hit the memory bandwith of GDDR5 on a 256 bit bus.
3. GDDR5 also does two operations per clock.

GDDR5 is definately a better alternative than GDDR3.

As to if Nvidia uses inferior parts, it is just that they taped out GT200 to use GDDR3, thats all.

Nvidia uses GDDR3 on their cards , not DDR4 or if you meant GDDR4 .

also GDDR5 @ 3600 is just the start. Once the process matures, it will get cheaper to the extent and much faster clock speeds will come out, as fast as 6ghz.

Fast GDDR3 ram is expensive, and might as well cost as much as slow GDDR5 ram. Once GDDR5 ram becomes popular enough to be on mainstream cards, GDDR3 will be a joke as the expensive 2.3ghz fast ram will cost more than than slow GDDR5 ram @ 3.6ghz. Technlogical advances is important, it is good if the cards can be flexible and do both GDDR5 and GDDR3, means faster + cheaper cards in the future.

You can't compare ATI and Nvidia with engineering or architecture, only the final product performance. And when it comes down to it, they are both in the same ball park and have good competition at every price point. 8800gt vs 4830, 4870 vs gtx260, etc.

Make a new years resolution to stop hating!

300 series card with 2GB GDDR5 and a 512 bit bus would be a real boon for 2560x1600 and TripleHead2Go users, especially when using lots of AA.
Could be expensive though.

not only that, but i believe it will be the future for webservers, once php/sql/etc are developed for that "universal parallel gpu thing" that is supported by like nvidia/ati/intel/etc

i can imagine it now.. google/etc converting their like. half a datacenter into a single rack of GPU's for their company. even Overclock.net could use that kinda horsepower...

anyone agree?

edit: to clarify the quote, i quoted it because of the massive ram.. "true horsepower hog applications" will not successfully be rewritten for GPU's until they are capable of having alot more memory..

No, nVidia/ATI's GPUs at their current state have little use for the majority of server stuff.

Not even Larabee is going to help out.
