Seagate FreeAgent Pro 1TB External Failed !

This is by far the worst HDD I have ever owned. I've owned it 2 months.

I bought it to store Music, Movies, Photo's etc while deployed. A 320gb Laptop isn't enough to hold enough media to last 7 months.

Unfortunatey, after transferring everything I had to the drive, it failed; Big time.

Windows detects it, and now wants to reformat it. I've went through 3 USB cables trouble shooting, and a Firewire 400. No luck.

Think any drive recovery software would be helpful?

I'm going to RMA this thing, but I really want to stay away from Seagate. I also had a 500 GB Maxtor and 750gb Seagate fail; Both Internals.

My luck is, it'll overheat to the failure point just trying to recover.
This thing gets blistering hot.

Do you think there is any hope? Does anyone have any recommendations??

My 500GB FreeAgent stopped working after about 2 months fairly heavy use. It would spin up and down for a few minutes then windows would want to format it.

Because I couldn't return it, I tried taking it apart and found it's just a regular Seagate SATA drive with a very small USB-to-SATA interface. Popped it into my desktop and lo and behold - it works absolutely fine, and has done for the last 8 months. I ran a SMART test and full surface check; no problems. The obvious conclusion: the USB interface failed (I think possibly due to overheating).

I know you want an external drive, but this is just an idea if there's anything you want to recover on it. I've left mine in because I didn't really need an external device but you could put it all back together fairly easily if you were going to RMA.

Oh, and Seagate are supposedly the most reliable manufacturer, Maxtor used to be rubbish (only drive I've ever had fail on me has been Maxtor, I've got 7 Seagate drives never caused me any problem). Seagate has now bought Maxtor...I'm not sure if their quality control has been passed on.

Either way a lot of "best quality" stuff is hearsay, but my opinion is that Seagate are a reputable top brand and I've never had anything but the FreeAgent fail, and that wasn't the drive itself. Just my experience though

My buddy has a maxtor external that was dead when he bought it. He took it apart and there was a seagate inside. We tried to put it inside of a tower but it failed miserably. Had to reset cmos after we took it out.

That sounds very unusual; suggests a serious power failure on the drive or something

Seeing how this drive has several interfaces; Mini-usb, Full Size firewire 400, mini firewire 400, and ESATA. All the controllers are on a small card at the bottom of the unit. Most newegg reviews have issues with this drive, and it usually has to do with heavy transfers, etc.

I did have a seagate 500gb that did go for toast in an external enclosure before, and I was able to verify it was the drive.

I won't know with this one unless I crack open this crazy case. It would be nice if I could recover all my data; Otherwise it will just be RMA in April.

Keep in mind that, at least with Seagate/Maxtor, you can't RMA the drive if it's been removed from the enclosure. The drive serial number from the drive inside the case won't validate.

I suggest hooking it up through the eSATA interface and seeing if you can recover anything with a Linux live CD (e.g. Recovery Is Possible).
