Wow... my XBOX 360 came with component cables, but the PS3 did not? D:

Hope you resolve your problem soon... Oh Great Game Master.

Highly Illogical.

I had the same flashing but I did manage to figure out a cure. I used whatever res was not flashing and found a menu to twiddle with but I cannot remember the particulars.

Between my last post and now, I had a mild epiphany...I have PS2 component cables, had them for years. Sure enough, a quick Google search tells me that they will work just fine with the PS3, so at least I do have that option reopened for the short term.

Of course, with the good epiphany came a bad epiphany...even if I can get 1080p to work over these cables, it's not going to work for the Blu-Ray movies. I forgot that that's just part of the spec: 1080p requires HDMI, the best component can do is 1080i; and if a movie has that image constraint token (which I don't think we have any way of knowing about beforehand), it will get dropped down to 540p! So since I bought this as a Blu-Ray player, component is only going to be a temporary workaround.

Death to everyone involved with HDCP. Seriously. Someone needs to kill them all. Dead, dead, dead.

Yeah, it's a Sony Bravia XBR3, which should work totally fine. I've had their support on the phone, and they want me to try the PS3 on another TV. Well, I don't have another HDMI TV. My monitor has an HDMI input, but I also don't have another cable. The main cable is snaked through the wall, it can't be reused; and the cheapest cable I recall seeing at the store was $20...so I have to shell out $20 for a cable I don't really need just to run one test in hopes of convincing Sony that their TV is at fault. They also wanted me to call Sony's PS3 support, which according to their web site will want me to perform the exact same test. Argh.

The only non-blinking mode I get is 480p. I have tried various combinations of options, especially the ones that are labeled as HDMI-specific, but to no avail.

Finally, some mild success to report. The PS2 component cable does indeed work just fine. Plugging that into my receiver (and doing the same with my cable box), then sending the receiver's output through the cables that run through the wall to the TV, and I can finally get a 1080p picture. And it is 1080p over component; unless the manual lies, it always sends the dashboard as the highest option selected. Since I selected 1080p and am not getting a black screen, 1080p over component is working.

I popped in The Dark Knight for a few minutes, and it does look very nice. I don't know a way to get my TV or the PS3 to display what resolution the movie is actually being shown in...I have to assume it's 1080i, but I sure would like to verify. Anyone know a magic keypress that does that for the PS3?

Hmm I remember having a similar problem, but it was due to running the hdmi through my receiver first then going to the tv, and you said you were running it direct to the tv. I'm not sure if there is a way to check the resolution the movie is playing at, the ps3 will always try to play whatever content you are trying to view in the highest mode that the OS is set to, so if its set to 1080p in the PS3 OS, then it should be playing at 1080p, I have the bluetooth remote, pushing the display button only gives me audio info I believe.

If your PS3 is running at 1080p - the movie will also be running at 1080p. Im pretty certain that Blu-Ray will 1080p through component if the TV supports 1080p via component (which you confirmed).

Have you tried HDMI via through your receiver instead of directly through your TV?

Oh and call Sony's support again and just say that you tried another TV and the same thing happened. See if that gets you anywhere. And if not, call again and tell them the opposite - it worked on the other TV and see where that gets you too.

Part of me wonders that, but everything I have read and indicates that Blu-Rays simply do not play at 1080p over component. The PS3 manual even says this, it says that the highest it will go is 1080i. So I have to believe I'm only getting 1080i out of the PS3 for movie playback, despite wanting to believe otherwise.

I could probably run a test: uncheck both 1080i and 720p in the PS3 so it doesn't think my TV can support those, leaving only 1080p and 480p selected. In theory, it should downgrade to 480p. Might have to try that when I have some time this weekend.

Unfortunately my receiver predates HDMI, so I can't do that. I can only do component switching. An HDMI switching receiver is on my "to do" list.

As much as it pains me, I think I'm just going to go buy a new cable and do the test they ask for. I have no immediate use for it after that, but I am going to finish my basement in the next couple of years and build an even better media/gaming room than I have now. So I'll be able to use the cable eventually, which lessens the pain a bit.

Yep, I did all that. Nothing is working.

The only output that works at all is 480p, which kind of defeats the purpose. I could have just stuck with a DVD player.

I found my TV's manual, looks like it supports 1080p over component, as does the PS3. Maybe I'll give that a try after all, maybe I can still get 1080p with the analog cables. I'll still be pissed off that I can't use HDMI...I have definitley noticed a slight change (for the worse) in picture quality when I switched my cable box from HDMI to component. But I guess analog 1080p would be better than digital 480p!

Edit - NVM, just realized that Sony doesn't ship a component cable in the box. What the hell...they advertised the PS3 for so long as the only true HD console, or whatever, and they don't ship a single HD capable cable in the box?!?
