Blinking...Vulcan is Irritated - Page 3

My wife borrowed a cable from a guy at her work, so I was able to test out some different configurations. It works just fine on 1080p over HDMI on my PC monitor, so the PS3 can be ruled out at the problem.

Even worse, the second HDMI port on my TV (on the side of the TV) gets no picture over HDMI at all, not even in 480p! So the problem is definitely the TV. Time to call Sony again tomorrow.

Just to add this, component is 100% 1080p compatible. I run my ps3 at 1080p on my computer monitor where dropping to 720p would be very noticeable, and since it's a CRT it physically cannot display interlaced.

You're talking about games, right? Sure you can get games in 1080p, and I'm getting the PS3's dashboard in 1080p over component just fine. But what happens when you play a Blu-Ray movie hooked up to your CRT? I don't see how you can get 1080p over component, the PS3 (and all players) are apparently programmed not to output BD movies in 1080p unless they're pushing the video over HDMI.

component may be 100% 1080p compatable - but there are factors to it...
1)Does the TV/Monitor accept 1080p via component? Many TVs don't.
2)Does the hardware (PS3) support 1080p via component?
3)Does the software (Blu-Ray) support 1080p via component?

So far, we know 1 and 2 - yes. But 3, we don't know. Im not quite sure myself.

We know #3...I just tested it when I saw this, it reminded me that I was supposed to do that.

The test is simple: Set the PS3 to output only in 480p or 1080p, disable both 720p and 1080i. Then watch a BD movie. It is painfully obvious that the resolution of the movie drops to 480p. Exit the movie, go back to the settings menu and reenable 720p and 1080i, then watch the same scenes. Oh my, much much clearer.

This is definitive, the PS3 (and presumably all BD movie players) will NOT show a BD movie over component cables at 1080p, it will downres to at least 1080i. Anyone who doesn't believe me is invited to try this simple test for themselves, it only takes about five mintues total. As long as your eyes work correctly, you will see the same thing I saw.

Actually, CRT absolutely displays interlaced. The whole concept of interlacing was done specifically for film, and on CRTs to get a better image without requiring extra bandwidth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlace

You are correct. The BluRay standard for movies requires a 100% HDCP connection from source to display. At this time, I believe that only HDMI can provide this, although maybe DisplayPort is capable of it as well.

Yes interlacing works very well on Cathode ray television screens. However, computer monitors like I'm using just cannot do it. You get an out of frequency error, and it can be a large hassle sometimes seeing as the ps3 defaults to 480i if you reset the settings.
