Open DVD-driva via PATA-cable?

Thread Starter
Hi all!

Yesterday I started tearing apart my old broken DVD player to use it´s chassi for my htpc i´m currently building. To my surprise the DVD reader were a regular DVD-rom with a PATA connection. I will (hopefully) be using it for the complete build.

My question is if any1 knows if it´s possible to open/close the DVD by stripping the PATA cable and placing a switch between two of its cables? I need to do this as there is no regular eject button on the DVD-drive itself.

Thanks in advance!

I believe that that command is handled by software alone. You might want to check the drive for an unsoldered connection where a switch could be placed.

Couldn't you just use a keyboard mapper and map a key like F6 or something to open the tray?

I know AutoHotKey would do it.

Thanks for fast reply!

Already checked, and I think I have found where the swith should be, but the soldered areas on the circuitboard doesn´t seem to go anywhere

Yes i guess that would work, but it would be a good thing to be able to open the tray without using the keyboard or such.

The keyboard is always right in front of you.
I don't see why it would be a problem to just push a button instead of trying to wire it up especially if you aren't even sure of what to do.

Could you open the drive housing and post pics of the circuit board adjacent to the front bezel?

If it looks like a standard PC-based DVD-ROM drive, then it probably is and the switch just hasn't been soldered to the PCB; in which case, the traces should still exist.
