High temps TRUE - E8400(me too) - Page 2

I worry about lapping my cpu as it could damage it beyond use :S

I'll first try re-seating and removing most of the thermal paste.
Should I clean it and apply new paste to it or just remove the over?

Okay, here's the thing, both cores are ALWAYS at 38 Celcius! Even at load.
There's defenatly something wrong with the temps. I get 38 Celcius from both Core Temp and OCCT.

When I reboot and get to bios, it tells me CPU is at 25Celcius which is ambiant temps

Don't lap it yet. Remove all of the paste w/ rubbing alcohol and some q-tips (or something w/o lint). Then reapply with a line the size of a grain of rice.

That sounds like stuck temperature diodes, which have been pretty common with 45nm CPUs like the E8400. They also are apparently only accurate at maximum temps, and might over report at idle. Mine does that. . .it usually idles at 35C even though I'm fairly certain it's cooler than that. Load temps on mine at 3.9GHz are generally around 48C. . .not a big increase, and given that these CPUs seem more voltage than temperature limited, I don't worry as much about the temps like I did on my 65nm CPUs.

Stuck sensor then. Nothing you can do other than asking for a replacement or toughing it out. If it's seated well then tell yourself that the temps are fine.

If you do a minor overclock (3.6Ghz or so), the temps may rise to around 45-ish at load. Maybe the temp is too low now for the sensor to change value, I've seen it before. And also the load temp is far more important.

i'll try OCing a bit 'cuz I believe I have adequate cooling (even with that extra thermal paste )

If it rises at 45 or something, will it get stuck at 38 when it cools down?
