HDD To Buy? SSD, WD Caviar Black, F1?

Thread Starter
hi, i currently have 580gb HDD (1x500gb, 1x80gb) i'm going to sell these as to be honest with you, i'm not really impressed with their performance. (sub 100mb write average iirc)

i require roughly 600gb but i would like to have 1tb of real space.

what would you recommend me?

30gb SSD for OS + 640 gb Western Digital Caviar Black?

2x640gb Western Digital Caviar Black?

1tb Samsung F1 SpinPoint?

what would you do if you were in my situation?

i'm mainly looking for speed rather than space. i'd like a quick start up mainly

thanks in advance.

Ok sorry that's not very helpful, given you probably want performance increases for file copying and...whatever else. Still valid though...

how bout a velociraptor and a 640 caviar black? velociraptor gives 300 gigs storage and the SSD speed but its less expensive

30gb SSD is probably the best but i can not find this cheap in the UK, only cheap in the US! lol

people keep saying VelociRaptor are cheaper than SSD's, over in the UK i can't find any cheaper than £100 (nearly 200$) 30Gb SSD's are around £60.

isn't it more about the MS speed rather than the read write speed? the VelociRaptor is literally the same as the SSD on read and faster on right but because of the MS timing on games and OS start up the SSD is apparently 5x quicker on some of the reviews i've read.

i always thought OS start-up was dependent on read speed alone. With one of the 2nd gen raptors for an OS drive, i get 45 second boot-up (from power-off). but if the raptor is that much more expensive, SSDs seem like a better alternative.

i'll check my start up time now on mh HD501LJ. be back with the results in 2mins.

ok it takes me roughly 55seconds from button to MSN auto signing in without no login scree, so pretty slow man. i need SSD or Raid-0 640gb Blacks.

i just re-timed my boot up and it works out to 33.4 seconds (sorry, i mixed up my systems in the above post). Power off to fully loaded and wifi connected. My post screen took 3 seconds and loading 7 start-up programs took approx. 20 seconds. The windows screen and log-in took the remainder.

EDIT: BTW the other system is running from a 250 seagate on XP. The timed system is vista ultimate x86

before going with a raid setup, maybe the SSD is a better choice. RAID is fast, but theres no guarantee it'll increase speed. have you tried trimming start-up programs and defragging your drives?

**also, cpu speed and RAM speeds also affect boot up, more so than HDD speed. I think i can only pull my time because of my cpu and ram

yeh i'm looking at SSD rather than the Raid to be honest. this is the one i'm thinking of getting.
Click Me
