8800GTS Stock Cooler

Hey everyone

I have an 8800GTS with the stock cooler. It was being used with a DuOrb before, but now has the stock cooler. I don't have any RAM thermal pads on there anymore. There is a little bit of a gap between the RAM and heatsink. Is this bad? I haven't had any problems. Right now I have both my cards stock because I'm scared to overclock the second card without thermal pads on the RAM. Any input?

I wouldnt want to run it without the pads in place, the manufacturer put them there for a reason. But if your running artifact free without issues, then the ram cant be overheating.

Definitely haven't had artifacts. The cards are in SLi right now, does that make a difference? I guess I should run a few games with the card single and see what happens.

I am not real sure how delicate RAM is. If it touches the heatsink, or metal... will it fry? I know you should always use non-conductive thermal compound.

ram has a composite cover (the part you can see) and will not short against a metal cooler. the stock cooler used pads because they are thicker, and the tolerances for the stock coolers is garbage (it varies) so they use the pads to ensure contact between the ram and the cooler

if your cooler is meant to cool the ram as well, use a quality thermal paste between the cooler and the ram and make sure there is good contact. i wouldnt run the ram bare as it will run hot on an 8800
