VLC doesn't seem to be able to do levels conversion, so it will look washed out on 99% of videos you watch.

So, I'd suggest anything BUT VLC. It doesn't really matter what, because most other players you find are DirectShow based. (Winamp, WMP and MPC are all DirectShow players)

Has to be the most misinformed comment I've ever heard, but I see it in just about every player thread. It's ironic how you quickly get flamed for being a brand fanboy on OCN, and yet it seems most people here are avid (and blind) VLC fanboys.
There is NO difference aside from the levels thing, because all codec packs use ffmpeg to decode the majority of video - and VLC does too.
If you see a difference, you're doing it wrong. "User error"... (hint: install ONE codec pack, or just install ffdshow-tryouts, Haali Splitter and MPC-HC)
