How to clean up Vista to run faster?

Thread Starter
I'm going over to my friend's house tomorrow to help him with his PC. He's running Vista and he says its very slow. Since I have no experience with vista, what free virus-scanning tools should I use? Also, I've read that registry errors commonly slow vista down - how can I fix that? Anything else that might cause his problems?

thank you!

Defrag HDD, use CCleaner. Check the downloads section here. If all else fails, format and reinstall.

Tune Up Utilities.
Great program, speeds up your comp a bit. It costs some cash though, but there was a deal to get the 2007 version for free awhile ago.
Just use the disk defragmenter and scan the computer with Avast! or something. It's probably because his hardware can't handle Vista well anyways.
Oh and yeah, try out CCleaner.

CCleaner and Auslogic DiskDefrag. Both are free.

I like Adaware's Lavasoft (Spyware).
Also, adding to CCleaner, use CCleaner's startup manager to reduce the number of startup items. On some PCs that I have worked on I have seen as many as 50 or 60 out of the box
