XP on a Mac Question

Thread Starter
I know VMware and BootCamp are two popular ways to run Windows on a MacBook. My question is, what's the best way? I'm not too familiar with the process here - All I know is I really don't want to dual boot. I'm pretty sure one of these programs allows you to just switch over on the fly. Suggestions and help = rep. Thanks in advance!

BootCamp will be dual boot. A virtual machine is a great solution. VMWare fusion is cool because you can run xp, and then integrate the two desktops and run the XP programs as if they're inside Leopard (not actually of course.) VirtualBox is a more lightweight solution for using a virtual machine.

Depends on what you want..... bootcamp is by far a better performer... vmware allows you to use both at the same time... bootcamp is technically a dual boot... but i recommend bootcamp... i run it on my mac mini... you get full native windows performance... vmware takes a performance hit

If you don't want to dual-boot then you can't use bootcamp as it essentially creates a fat32 partition that you install Windows XP onto.

VMwareFusion offers new virtualization support for OS X. The app just runs and the XP environment runs in a window under native OS X. VMwareFusion isn't free but does offer easy file sharing between the host machine and XP.

Virtualbox released their latest build that allows for OpenGL support, it runs the same way as VMwareFusion and is free. Virtualbox is not as polished as VMware so a lot of it depends on what you want to run in XP.

I use virtualbox and have not had an issue with it, going to try the latest build that offers OpenGL support and try to record some performance benchmarks.

Thanks for the replies. There's seem to be a lot of options on the table. I'm downloading VirtualBox now to see if that's the way to go, and because it's completely free.

But basically I'm looking to run XP programs inside Leopard seemlessly.

Once you get guest additions installed on virtual box, it won't capture your mouse, so when you're in the XP desktop window, you can just slide right out into leopard. VMWare Fusion is gonna be the one that lets you run the XP programs without having to have the desktop window pulled up, but VirtualBox is great, it's what I use.

I have used Boot Camp on the wife's Mac Mini for quite a while. It is impressive how well it runs XP. I recommend you give it a shot, Mike
