FPS Headset Question

Hi guys.

I'm in the neighbourhood looking for new headphones to replace my horrid Zalman RM6F. Read some useful posts from killa_concept over here and thought this would be the best place to ask these questions.

Firstly I will be mainly using them to play games such as L4D, Quake 3, Warsow and possibly CSS. I would also use them for other FPS's that come and go but thats not important. I want to be able to hear where people are on the map (especially in L4D) and these headsets should comfortablly outperform my logitech Z-5500 speakers (sound positioning wise). So along with the questions.

-5.1 or Stereo? I have a creative X-fi audio so its not an issue on that side)
-What headphones would you guys recommend? ;
Seinnheiser PC350 have been recommended to me, but after reading some threads i have no problem with attaching a mic (since i've done it a few times before).
-Is it true games like CSS and L4D prefer stereo sound to 5.1?

Found them in UK for £30. Are you sure these will be good enough quality? They don't look much of an upgrade from my Zalmans =|.

I'm looking for something special, but i'm out of my depth when it comes to headphones/headsets

I'm also thinking of some headphones. I'm skeptical on surround sound, I've heard many people say there isn't enough room for proper staging and whatnot. Also, I use some cruddy Logitech stereo speakers now, and in Source games at least, I can locate that footstep or whatever anywhere around me. I have no idea how it works, I can only assume it has a lot to do with how well the game is coded for it. I also use a nice Onkyo 7.1 system on my xbox, so I know how well a quality surround system does for positioning, and I can locate equally with either one.

Long rant, anyways, I am also looking for a quality set of cans, preferably open (closed gets really hot on my ears), and definitely over-ear, not on or *shudder* in. I am interested to hear any other opinions on the stereo vs surround thing, but I'm just fine with stereo. Would like a mic as well, but not needed. Price, anything from $50-$100 would be my range.

I have been using them for about 4 years now and I havent found a better set to replace them. The mic is crystal clear and the surround is amazing.
