Bought a New Laptop

It should be here tomorrow afternoon.

Specs:

Lenovo W500

15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) CCFL LCD
Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit
Intel P9500 (2.53Ghz, 1066Mhz FSB, 6MB L2, 25W)
4GB DDR3-1066Mhz (2x2GB, DDR3-1066, CL5, 1.5V)
Intel X25-M SSD (80GB, 250MB/s read, 70MB/s write)
ATI FireGL V5700 512MB + Intel 4500HD Hybrid Graphics (Real time switching)
DVD-ROM / CD-RW
Intel 5300 (A,B,G,N) + Integrated Bluetooth
6 cell battery
3 Year Warranty

I think I got a pretty good deal on it. The laptop ran me $1285, the memory was $95, and the SSD was $500. Total about $1880.

I am going to be using the machine at work and school for CAD, CAM, and FEA. My CAD software just released a 64 bit Vista certified version, so I can't wait to use it with 4GB of ram!

I really hope so. It was between this and the Dell M4400, which has a more powerful graphics card (Quadro FX770). But the Dell was a lot more expensive, only came with 35W processors, DDR2, and probably wasn't built as well.

Yeah I have a T60p, great machine. I am going to have to take a photo shot of the family starting with the 600E, T21, T60p, and the W500.

DDR3 is wonderful from a performance standpoint as well as a power saving standpoint. DDR3 uses 17% less power than DDR2!

You stated you thought you got a good deal. Yea, and that is an understatement. Any tips or explanation how you got? I configured what I could on Lenovo site and price is way above. Also not seeing the hybrid graphics mentioned. Well neither here nor there you got a great notebook.

Now on GPU I do not know a lot about these professional cards but are you sure it is below the 770? I don't know and sure some have the answer but does not appear to be much below the 770. Looks to me like the pro versions of HD3650 and 9600m GT. AMD GPU Tool should make it as good (if it is not already).

Can you find me a memory bandwidth where DDR3 1066Mhz out performs DDR2 800Mhz beyond +-5% on a mobile platform? Hell on any platform? DDR2 800Mhz wins on some. The higher CL equalizes. Now since I don't do CAD for all I know CL matters less but real world it does and until or if they get that 1066Mhz down it does not have an advantage on DDR2 800Mhz.

But how did you get such a great deal!

I used the Visa discount (www.lenovo.com/visa) and the coupon USXHOLIDAY to get my price.

The FX770 is slightly faster than the V5700. Here is a benchmark to show the performance:

(from this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=315910)

DDR2-800 CL5 has a primary latency of 12.5ns and a maximum bandwidth of 6,400MB/s. This is compared to DDR3-1066 CL7 with a primary latency of 11.3ns and a maximum bandwidth of 8,528MB/s. It is topping on the cake when the DDR3 is using less power than the DDR2.

Paul merry Xmass and all. Just to talk not argue. Mostly because I have started wondering in the last week.

I took a look at your NBR link. What caught my eye other than does look like I was correct that your card is the 3650. Is this card has GDDR3 so is 600/700. One reason I care is I have the DDR2 version and wonder how crippled it is? Well the link has the GDDR3 3DMark at about 3900 and I get 3800 at 600/400?

This is not to extend the DDR2 vs DDR3 from before but I can only assume the reason why my 400Mhz DDR2 hangs so close to the GDDR3 is CL? If you see my sig I boost my core and memory and get 4800. I can test but I know if I leave core alone and boost memory to 500Mhz it will beat the GDDR3 700Mhz.

This is just the musings of someone who got stuck with the DDR2 version. Yes the GDDR3 is better but you can't compare as apples to apples? DDR2 500Mhz seems to beat GDDR3 700Mhz? My point of mentioning is it suprises me. I got stuck w/DDR2.

I got mine for $1199 so you got the lower TDP CPU and DDR3 for the same with better GPU. And the more solid build.
