Which would perform better, in gaming and overall?

My sig rig
Q6600
4GB DDR2
2x 8800GT SLI

Candidate rig
i7 920
6GB DDR3
Single GTX 260 core 216

Thoughts?

I would say that the candidate rig is more superior from what I have read. I haven’t had any personal experience with the I7 CPU"s though. the GTX 260 would also be more powerful than the 2 x 8800gt (excluding folding).

the gtx260 is about on par with 2x8800GTs but will free you up to SLI 260s later down the line
As a whole system, the i7 is obviously the better one... the question is whether or not you can justify the cost or not

My Q6600 runs stable @ 3.75GHz so I've had no reason to want to upgrade to a 775 45nm quad... let alone an i7 cpu! I doubt they'll come out with any game that will fully stress my CPU for a year or two - and by then, i7s will be more affordable and there might even be alternatives

i just priced out an i7 build for my friend with a gtx260, the lowest i can make it with decent brand parts and headroom for upgradeablity is 1300 bucks. i think that my rig can keep up with his new i7 build, its just that he would be able to upgrade in the future and i wouldnt.

dont forget, you might need a new psu...

Thanks for replies guys. Yes the resolution would be 1680x1050 (for starters). I guess it can't hurt to wait a bit and see if prices drop. BloodRage is so sexy though, and so are those new 55nm 260's...

I was stable at 3.6GHz until I had to unfortunately RMA my mobo... now the best I can get it 3.15GHz

Very true. Although I think this one could hold out on a single GTX 260.

The i7 is expensive..but future-proof imo.

If you think the Q6600 is doing fine, no need to upgrade.
"If it isn't broken, don't fix it" is my moto for upgrading ... >.<

Yeah, if it's not broke don't fix it. The i7 is supposed to be the flagship chip for the next few years (as indicated by the coming i5), so the candidate rig will be far superior and the stupid huge memory bandwidth/raw power will be good for a great many things besides gaming. Also I can't ignore the value of the new rig as a learning experience with this new technology. I wouldn't know what to do to overclock one if I had the opportunity. But you do
