Is there any cpu that can beat the I7 ?

Like q9550 @ 3.4, can it beat i7 @ 2.6?

My friend is thinking of gaming build he has a q9300 , 2gb ddr3 ram, he has a XFX 790 mobo.

Is it worth it to move to I7 ?

He wants to get asus rampage I told him it wasn't worth it.

I think the i7 beats it just because of the faster architecture and more cache?

aha then he have to wait until i7 mobo get down?
yeah, but if has the money I'd say let him go for it. If he can't afford it for when he needs it, theres not real need to go i7. It's like getting a fararri and debating between a 450 and a 500 horsepower engine, both well get the job done just fine.

If he's buying everything new there's no reason to buy 775 socket. If on the other hand he's got lots of stuff he can still use (board, memory) it might be worth it.

I would say its more worth the move to p45 , that quad will oc well on a ud3p or similar board, and unless he is sli'ng cards he will get much better single card performance from that setup.

And when we say i7 is faster than 45nm its true but were not talking the differance between
p4 ht and c2d here, its much less since the c2q 45nm are beasts to begin with.

Why would overclock the one and not the other?

For the same clock speed, the i7 is up to about 30% faster because of the new microarchitecture, cache and memory access. It appears more expensive, but not if you are buying a 775 MB of similar quality. You can get 6GB of 1600MHz DDR3 for as low as $180 now.

If you are buying new its simple... Get i7.

If you are upgrading from a lower line C2D or 775 chip and already have DDR2 / DDR3 and a mobo then grab a nice 775 45nm quad.

Nothing that's PC-compatible will beat the Core i7 for quite a long time to come.
