If I was stuck with that I wouldn't think of anything BUT a Core i7.

The CPU, RAM and mobo will have to go. The PSU might need an upgrade. The rest can probably stay.

Man, check the benchies, the i7 kicks butt! I'd go i7 for sure if I had my motherboard die on me. Sell your RAM, CPU, etc, and go i7

I upgraded just my CPU, so it wasn't worth it to go Core i7. However, if you want to upgrade more parts, the Core i7 920 is better than the Q9550 IMO as clock for clock it's faster and I've seen them overclocked as high as 4.2GHz.

Core i7 has lots of performance but doesn't really add much for gaming right now so it might be worth it to just get a new mobo to keep the system alive and save up for a nice Core i7 build.

go for it get yourself a i7 system

i7 is faster and a better investment for the future. better FSB, architecture, support for DDR3, ect.

I got tired of my 680i, and decided to go for i7, cause I had no plans on getting another nvidia board to run my 8800gt sli, and I haven't looked back. Its not just that I can oc to 4ghz or that I can run 8 threads in wcg, the platform itself is just much better, though that would have been the case with any intel based chipset...
