[DailyT] California Texting While Driving Ban Going Into Effect January 1

The state of California has already banned driving while talking on a cell phone without the use of hands-free technology, and sending text messages while driving is next to be banned. The new law prohibiting adults from texting and driving goes into effect on January 1, 2009.

Prior to the law banning text messaging, a driver believed to be text messaging could only be pulled over if they were violating a different traffic law at the time. But now, drivers believed to be reading or writing a text message can be cited by police.

It seems a bit hard to actually catch someone texting while they are driving. Talking is easy to spot, and usually before you actually see them, you know that they are talking just by the way that they are driving. Texting probably has the same signs, but in most cases you can't physically see someone texting, since they usually have the phone near their lap.

If I were to pulled over for another infraction and had the phone in my hand, I'd put it away before the officer ever got out of the patrol car.

I still think it should be banned, and people should be heavily fined for doing it. It's a serious safety issue.

It's probably a bright move. It's pretty difficult to do both at the same time. I only text/drive at the same time when the roads are mostly empty...so I I screw something up, I only hurt myself.

I hold my phone at the top of the steering wheel. That way I'm looking at the road at the same time.

I text and drive at the same time, only when I'm at a stop light or driving slowly though. That and I pay more attention to the road. Lots of replies saying "what the hell did you just say?" to see my texts were garbled words, lolz.

But being out here in California for this long, good. Most of these people here can't drive worth a damn anyhow(especially when it rains...).

Oh, don't even get me going on weather conditions. I live in an area where it snows constantly between Oct-Mar. Every single year, the drivers get worse. I drive a Sentra (and have always driven a small car) and I've never had a single problem.

The only problem I have now is stopping myself from jumping out of my car and stabbing peoples tires. Grr.

Good, Texting is for 15 year olds who shouldn't drive in the first place.
