I have an idea.

Some nerds should find a way of making only the driver's section of the car be completely radio-silenced whilst the car is in motion.

Problem solved.

Add: For all the smartasses who add: What about GPS? Like the usual smartasses on OCN: Make the GPS able to operate as the radio jammer should only jam cell phone frequencies.

I arrived in the LA area a few days ago and i've seen a couple digital signs stating "no texting while driving". I was amazed because I had no clue before seeing it that in California texting was allowed but cellphone use was not. Both can be potentially dangerous while driving I suppose but IMO texting is much worse since you have to keep looking away from the road. Back home in Canada we are not affected by any such laws yet but I bet it will be coming.

'Bout damn time, Cali. This is one law I think you guys should disseminate throughout the rest of the union. I've been nearly hit by many a honda/minivan piloted by a texter.

I hold my phone at the top of the steering wheel. That way I'm looking at the road at the same time.

Get off my road.

No, seriously, get off. I don't want you anywhere NEAR A public highway unless you leave your damn cell phone at home.

all laws in california are BULL CRAP!

next they'e gonna make a law that says you can't listen to the radio while driving. come the hell on already.

they just need to make one broad law that bans STUPID PEOPLE. people that are just plain dumbasses are the cause for all the retarded laws in this country.

it's just plain unfair to target all people who do something that a few people have done and caused traffic collisions. it's getting to the point where the law is gonna state that just because one person has the same physical profile and childhood background as a serial killer/rapist, they should be imprisoned for the safety of civilization.

i'm a far better and safer driver than anyone i know. and i know this because in the 14 years that i've had a driver's license, i've never been involved in a traffic collision, yet i've had upwards of 10 - 15 speeding violations and have had my license taken away for too many points in a year. sure "speeding" might highten my chances of being in a traffic collision, but it hasn't happened yet or even come close. now some people might claim that it will eventually happen, but statistics also say that just because you own a gun, you're more liable to injure or kill someone. so should we make it so people can't possess a gun?

this world is turning to crap right before my eyes. i'm telling you right now that before long, you won't be able to do anything (legally) that is remotely unsafe or else you'll be fined...

... walking down the street. well, there's a chance that a car could run off the side of the road, so now it's illegal to walk down the street for fear that someone could be injured or killed.

... being outside in a rain storm. statistics say that more men than women are struck by lightning, so now it's illegal for men to be outside during a rain storm for fear than they will be struck by lightning and die.

*shakes head*

oh, and i just remembered... how long has the human race been alive on this planet without these stupid laws? 10's of thousands of years or more? just imagine if all these safety laws had been around for that long. there would probably be more people on this planet than we'd know what to do with.

it's called survival of the fittest for a reason... we can't have every tom, dick and harry moron living and breeding another generation of idiots.

Your tune will change real quick when one of these texting 'tards t-bones you and permanantly disables you and/or kills you. I've gotten lucky so far, I've dodged the 20 or 30 people that have nearly hit me, but it's only a matter of time, I hope to god Tennessee enacts this law. It's not to protect the 'tards, it's to protect the people they keep hitting.

Now, if you happen to be a texter as well..........

You sir are retarded. Lets hope your pulled over before someone gets hurt. Flame suits don't protect you from stupidity.

Is it really all that hard to pull over and reply to a text message. "Hey, I'm driving I'll give you a call or text when I get home."

It's sad that we have to go as far as to ban this. With something like this the chance of getting into an addiction while texting is much higher than the chance of getting a ticket. I don't think the ban is really going to do anything against people like the above who don't really care who or what they wreck into. If they are already taking the risk of texting while driving I seriously doubt the fear of the ticket will phase them much.

I'm been wrong about these things before though. It never fails to surprise me what actually gets through to stupid people. "What, McDonald's is offering a free cheese burger to those who don't text while driving? OMG, I'm never going to send another text while driving again!"

Anybody who thinks it's okay to text while they drive really needs to focus. You are the reason we can't have anything nice.

i know how to text by memory and don't need to look at my phone while texting.

i also know how to talk on the phone and drive at the same time. just like i know how to listen to the radio (and change stations) and sing at the top of my lungs at the same time.

and no i won't be singing a different tone if someone hits me and injures/kills me. it's called life, there's an inherent risk that you'll die.

if you don't agree that there are people who can do things in this world and there are people who can't do the same things... then there's something wrong with you.

but saying that, i don't talk on the phone or text that often period. so doing either in the car is a rare occurence.

so how far are you willing to take this "protection" that the law affords you? would you support a law that gives the same consequences as say a DUI to someone who falls asleep on the road? what if that person had an undiagnosed case of narcolepsy (where you randomly fall asleep) and ran into someone and killed them?

and what about guns? should we have laws that ban guns?

i'm sorry, but you can make all the laws you want and life won't get any better. it'll just make us all criminals.

I'm not saying the law is not needed but why is it regarding text messages only? They should just ban the use of a cell phone altogether unless you have a wireless ear piece.

That way both of your hands are on the steering wheel or at least in a position that you can quickly get it there in order to maneuver obstacles.

Here in Texas, they just recently passed a law banning cell phones in school zones completely. A step in the right direction, next they should ban cellulars on the high way where accidents are more prone.

Allow me to rip your analogy for a moment. Suppose that Bill could trace the outline of a child with a machine gun burst; should shooting at children be allowed because one guy can pull it off without seriously risking the safety of others?

Disregard, get back to tin foil hat.
