Pixie, I'll take it as a divine inspiration that clear on the other side of the US from me. Its people like you who really do get into wrecks. it dosnt matter if you have the ability to text while driving, most people on this planet cant without endangering the lives of everyone around them. If you dont like the law, then cry harder, please.

This entire country needs a law similar to this, but I dont think that one should be pulled over for suspicion of texting unless the driver is dumb enough to hold said phone on the steering wheel. I dont know about everyone else here, but my main concern while driving isnt keeping in touch with my friends, its getting from A to B safely. Passing laws like this make the roads safer, so you can shove your "but OH-EM-GEE, I can text while driving and not wreck!!" into the same place you keep your common sense.

/rant

EDIT: just thought that I'd add that I'm 18 with one speeding ticket and no accidents. My friends even say I take driving "too seriously" when they have upwards of 5 tickets and two or three wrecks each. Time for a change?

Are you people seriously so... I don't even want to use the word.... That you're this mad that you can't text anymore while you're supposed to be driving and not getting yourselves or others killed?

No, seriously. What the hell is the matter with you?
it's not about the texting. but almost every single one of you is too dense to see that.

why is there a law that says you can't hold a phone in your hand and drive at the same time? because a few morons got into a wreck cuz they were too busy talking and not busy enough driving.

oh but wait, you can still talk and drive... so long as you buy a piece of equipment. guess what, the underlying problem still exists - people aren't paying attention to driving. everyone of you who can't differentiate that is a flipping moron.

passing laws like this DO NOT make the roads safer. don't kid yourself or anyone else. if the action doesn't affect the drivers ability to operate a motor vehicle safely, then nothing should happen to that driver.

I'm guessing you're cool with drunk driving as well? Since not everyone who drives drunk crashes. The number one cause of death of people under 30 is car accidents. I was on www.mydeathspace.com and it was interesting the ratio of car accident deaths to everything else.

Driving while talking on your cell phone is as bad as driving drunk.

Driving while texting is twice as bad as talking on your cell phone.

Maybe you should petition to have laws made specially for you since you are so awesome on the road.
obviously you can't grasp simple ideas, so let me help you out. i wasn't talking about a cell phone or texting law for thousands of years ago, but i can see how you thought that since you're a moron.

for you to quantify how bad something is without figures just proves how much of a moron you actually are. maybe i really should start a petition to abort fetus' like you before you're allowed to infect the rest of the world.

and you're damn right i don't agree with DUI laws. just like i don't agree with hate crime laws. just because you can get into a wreck doesn't mean you will. a person could get pulled over because his light over his license plate is out (because somehow that's an issue when a cops headlights are shining on your license plate ) and get arrested for a DUI. the cop could have been following him for miles and not noticed any signs of that person driving out of the norm, but just because of a faulty light that person has to spend thousands of dollars and do months of the most retarded schooling ever imagined. when any other person who was 0.01% less (assuming the 1st person was at the legal limit) or had not been drinking would have simply gotten a fix-it ticket. that's so horribly unfair.

people go out and get into wrecks everyday w/o any of the modifiers that are "against the law". do you idiots really need a law in place to tell you how not to get into a wreck?

i never said i didn't take driving seriously. everyone just likes to assume what i do. like your accusation that "people like me" get into wrecks. since you've failed to read my previous posts, let me enlighten you... i haven't gotten into any wrecks in 14 years of driving.

tell you all what, the day that i get into a wreck that's my fault, i'll post it up here for everyone to make fun of me. but until that day comes, how about you realize that laws don't make people safer, men with guns do.

For one, you are correct. I put you [the person advocating the ability to text while driving] into the same category as another group of people [people who get into wrecks by texting while driving], seeing as the general gist of all of your posts were:

So how about you read MY posts before accusing me of not reading yours?

and in regards to the bold part, If you honestly believe that, I hope you never get into politics. The last thing we need is a leader who takes the same stance. Laws are there so that a legal entity can hold people accountable for their actions. If you dont like the way this country runs, you have three options:

1. Vote for a leader who's willing to let you do whatever you want
2. Lead a revolt
3. Leave

A few? Do you live under a rock?

Here's a case regarding texting specifically:

Quote:
LOS ANGELES A Metrolink engineer sent a text message from his cellphone 22 seconds before he collided with an oncoming freight train in an accident that killed 25 people, including himself, and injured 135 others last month, federal authorities said Wednesday.

Engineer Robert M. Sanchez sent the message at approximately 4:22 p.m., just before his Metrolink 111 train slammed ...

Exactly; it's a stupid law. It's obvious that whichever legislator drafted this bill was in cahoots with someone who makes bluetooth headsets. The usage of phones while driving should have altogether been banned.

And exactly why not? If you've got 10 idiots who would text or hold a phone to their heads while driving before the law was passed, you might stop 7 of them with the law and make the roads that much safer.

What does that mean?

And just btw, chatting on a phone, let alone texting, DOES affect peoples' ability to drive. I don't get where you come up with the idea that driving while paying attention to the road is the same thing as driving while pressing buttons on a phone or holding one up to your head (or even just chatting with a bluetooth device, for that matter).

I'm beginning to wonder: do you even drive a car?

Wow, thanks for the backup guys. Nice to see some people on OCN have a head on their shoulders.

The Mythbusters tested this 'I can text and drive safely" theory. They found you might as well have a BAC % of 0.10, as you are just as impaired. They also found that a normal conversation makes you as inattentive as if you had a BAC of 0.8.

Not only that, but there's been thousands of studies, some by the US Government, some by the IIHS(They're the guys that ensure those airbags in your steering wheel protect you instead of kill you. Auto safety = their job), and they ALL back up Adam and Jamie's results.

The ONLY valid reason to drive and be on a phone would be if you are phoning the police and tailing a dangerous driver, and you are updating the police on said driver's position untill units can take it over. Beyond that, I can't think of any other valid reasons.

Didn't read the thread, but, two cents anyway.

Glad.

Yup...

If your driving, why in HELL are you texting? I have a friend that does that, puts the damn phone IN HIS LAP, and texts! Nearly runs us off the damn road when he does to!

Some people are better, but none the less...I am glad...Go cali..

I still have yet to learn to drive, but this law will prevent many future accidents. I don't want to be driving in the near future and then get hit by some 16 year old who is texting his friend "LOLSORZ!". Besides, isn't driving a 2 ton piece of steel already hard enough? I could go into a whole rant about how texters are a danger on the road but it's late and I can't be bothered to type much more.
