Well, I'm just glad none of my friends have notebooks with those GPUs.

Get the extended warranty

As for other cards,
I'd say as long as you have a Evga, BFG or XFX with a lifetime warranty I wouldn't worrie about it.

Good question, I think that'snot ethical at all :S

anyways the new GTX 295 is coming and if they have this problem too, then Nvidia will not survive unless they release another GPU, i dunno, maybe 2 GTX 280 in a sandwich setup??

Well, this gives Nvidia a lot of bad reputation and this makes me feel like I should buy ATI cards until nvidia improves their products as they have to....

what do you guys think?

I don't know why. She's going for software and business accounting, so I'm thinking even an Intel integrated GPU would be enough, but the reqs are as follows:

C2D 2.2Ghz+
15.4 widescreen display
120G HDD (250G recommended)
3G RAM
wireless adapter
CD/DVD Burner
256m Nvidia GPU

I'm planning on buying this one, but I want to make sure I won't get one of these defective GPU's.

so does anyone actually have a chip that's failed?

you can make the same claim about DAAMIT and say that their chips are bad but never see an actual failure all while driving their stock price down to floor, if its not low enough already

That laptop looks very nice for the price but, why does she needs an Nvidia based laptop? why not an ATI based laptop? you should check that with the school to see if it's possible to get a lap with an ATI GPU before buying it.

It only happens to the computers you buy at wallmart.

My 9600mGT pooped out on my once already (mostly cause it's a rebadged 8600mGT). and the bad thing is that nVidia can't just go and replace or recall chips in laptops, the company would go bankrupt 5x over. For one, they don't have the product. For two, they don't have the liquid capital. For three, the chips mostly crack under repeated stressing which builds faults between the distinct materials (see "Why things break" by Dr. Mark E. Eberhardt for a good explanation in layman's terms) and they don't want to repair something that just "has a good chance to break". For four, they'd have to replace the whole compy to do that in most cases. These are on the lappy mobos
