crt vs lcd - Page 2

what about affect on the eyes, which one damages the eye less
post #12 of 33
LCD. CRT gives you greater eyestrain i believe.
Pros for CRT:
Good picture
(Usually) affordable
Higher refresh rate
Less prone to dead pixels/failing

Pros for LCD:
Save desk space, look better
Decent picture quality
Always go on sale!
Less eyestrain
WEIGHT!

Cons for crt:
WEIGHT
looks ugly on a desk
Not widely supported/available
More eyestrain

Cons for LCD:
Not as good picture as CRT
price
Can die easily/ship with dead pixels sometimes

I'm sure there's more.....

once upon a time crts were considered better for gaming when lcds were pulling 15ms response times. Nowdays, there is really no compelling reason to buy an crt except price. my local computer store has 21" trinitrons for $50 a pop.

There is only one reason that conviced me to get LCD, how huge the CRT's are!! Thats the only reason for me.

Bad back? I don't even do workouts and my 70lbs monitor isn't THAT bad.

You also get better picture quality with LCD's compared to CRT's, although this is often down to the DVI cable, which not many CRT's have as they tend to use analogue.
No.

But if you want your desktop to look nice then go for a LCD. And go for that top of the line 1680x1050.. Resolution IMO isnt all that important (well it is if the difference is huge), but yeah if that 1680 LCD has better contrast ratio etc it will look a lot better.
Bolded for truth.

And I can get a CRT that has a better image quality than your LCD for $40.

Really many LCDs are bad without people realizing it. They are just too focused on how bad the CRTs they have tried are, and they find the LCDs better. Even the Samsung 226CW (which is/was one of the best gaming monitors) ghosts for me. LCDs still aren't as good for gaming.

They don't damage your eyes unless the phosphor in the CRT is dying. Which means the last ~100 hours of its life.

They are still better and much cheaper, as you mention yourself.

Isn't that just a minor issue? CRTs are much cheaper than a LCD for first time cost, perhaps not for the electrical bill, but that's a just a minor thing.

Learn to use something else than 60hz

They definitely don't look crisper than my CRT. Yes I'm at native res and at all sorts of refresh rates. Brighter I also doubt.

What's up man! I've been using an IBM e54 crt for 8 years now, and I finally got an lcd monitor. Here's my 2 cents from someone who just switched.

The LCD definitely looks a lot better on your desk than the crt, it's also extremely easy to carry around, even with one hand. It's hard to tell you in person how the colors can be compared. The crt was more of like a crisp and sharp... the lcd is more of like a fluid motion color scheme... The colors are actually really really different on a lcd than a crt. The crt looks more sharp and crisp but the lcd is more smooth. The blacks aren't as good on the lcd, but in general the brights are a lot more smooth. As far as eyestrain goes it's about the same... if your gonna stare at a pc for more than 2 hours at a time your eyes are going to strain. Get the lcd man, I promise you won't be dissapointed, just be sure to get one with a nice contrast ratio and a good response time.
