Random shut offs:(

Thread Starter
Ok, I am not really sure what is going on here. It all started that my pc WONT restart. If I try to restart it from windows, it just shuts off and doesn't turn back on without using the power button again, yet if I try to use the restart button on my case, it freezes up b4 even making it to the log on screen. That was my original problem, but now I also get random (what I am assuming would be restarts) shutoffs. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Our HTPC has also been beginning to restart on its own sometimes, which is making me wonder how well our power in the house is wired, though we never had problems until recently.

I have ran numerous virus scans just to be safe since the problem has began, but all came up clean other than cookies. I also recently changed the PSU and redid my cable management, could something possibly be pulled too tight or something causing the restarts?
All help is greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance

considering u have an Ultra PSU that is not on the recommended list (http://www.overclock.net/power-suppl...-supplies.html), i would give that some concern.

And what exactly is wrong with her Ultra PSU? I've been running my Apevia PSU for 3 years now, and its not on that "recommended PSU list". And I haven't had a single issue yet.

I would say your problems sound to me like....

a) Cables too tight, and / or a short somewhere.
b) Motherboard could be shorting the wires that are between mobo / mobo tray.
c) That screw that goes tink tink tink inside of your PSU (or whatever it is that's loose in there).

Are any of the cables routed underneath the motherboard?

In my experience, a bad sector on a HDD can also cause sudden, inexplicable shutdowns. Try running chkdsk /f on your OS's partition.

Other possibilities include a piece of software that's not playing nice with the rest of your system. I've seen this on my systems with an older version of CoreTemp (I stopped using CoreTemp for a long time because of this; to his credit, the program author acknowledged that it was a problem and worked to eliminate it. CoreTemp is now again excellent and ultra-reliable) and Everest Unlimited. A recent version of Everest Unlimited caused shutdowns on my gaming rig, so I rolled back to an older version.

Hope this helps!

It's gotta be your PSU my friend. I am just about hundred percent sure.

UNLESS! Your CPU is getting way hot and turning off system.

Your PSU is some unknown name,, thats what happens, gotta RMA ! if your temps are good but it shuts off, your PSU is going to die soon! get it taken care of,,, gl,

Interesting points there txtmstrjoe.

It COULD potentially be a bad sector. Froggy will have to run those tests .

I didn't even THINK about Everest causing these random shut-offs. The HTPC build that she refers to doesn't even have Everest on it. It has the TV Tuner application and F@H on it, and that's really it. I'm thinking in THAT case, the CPU or PSU may be overheating causing the random shut offs.

In Froggy's rig, it could be the bad sector, or it could even be Everest Ultimate. We've been running version 4.60 Everest, so perhaps that is the issue. Which version of Everest were you having problems with Joe, so I can rule that out?

Oh lord... I'm a little unsure now which version of EU I had those shutdowns on. I'm running v.4.5 right now; when I rolled onto the next one (which I'm assuming is v.4.6) I had those nasty shutdowns. I know that there was a thread on Lavalys' own forums about the shutdown issue; as I recall it affected an AM2 nF-based motherboard (I forget which specific chipset, but I do know the thread starter had an nVidia chipset). I uninstalled v.4.6 (which was a pain, surprisingly enough) and went back to v.4.5. No more problems.

Hopefully you can track down the reasons for the shutdowns. It's one of the more annoying problems that I know about.
