My first attempt at lapping the rifle

My temps are pretty high.. mostly because of the quad core so I wanted to try and lap my cooler.

I started out with 800 grit and quickly moved to 1000 then to 1500 and on to 2000.

I know I didn't achieve a mirror finish but you could definitely see yourself in the cooler when it was finished. I would call it more of a cloudy mirror finish.
(The pictures don't really show this)

If you are looking to get a true mirror finish I would suggest finding a polishing kit with 3600 -12000 grit sand paper.

In the end my temps dropped about 1C under load.

Before:

After:

How I did it:

Don't put pressure on the heatsink just let its own weight do the sanding. I taped each paper down to a glass table and went back and fourth about 20 times up and back in each direction.

When I was finished I also tried another method of applying the thermal paste according to a guide I found online from benchmarkreviews.com

Overall I would say make sure you go with a polishing kit and finish lapping until you have a mirror.

Rifle? Where'd you get that name from? It's called the HDT-S1283.

that sucks, +rep for giving it a try though, the base on mine seems pretty unbalanced but i was afraid of piercing the heat pipes if i lapped it.

you've got plenty of room to work with.. the piped have to be at least 3/32" thick. I know that seems like nothing but remember that you're working with really fine sandpaper.

Do you use the push-pin mounting system that comes standard with the rifle? If so, try the Xigmatek crossbow mounting kit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233019. Pressure makes a big difference, as well as surface finish.

Secondly, as the surface finish improves, you can (and should) use less thermal compound. I know it's a pain, but install the cooler a couple times, using less compound each time, and verify upon disassembly that you are getting full coverage of the heat pipes. Look at the layout of the chips below the integrated heat spreader http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appi..._quad_wcap.pdf (diagram on page 4), and think about the best way to orient the cooler, as well.

Good luck, Bruce.
