Hi guys
I just bought today a Gigabyte Motherboard EP45-UD3P with an Intel Q9650, and 4x2 GB of OCZ Reaper PC 8500, and also an ATI Radeon HD 5850, I want to overclock my CPU up to 4.2 GHz ( i know its possible, I heard some did it ) and my ram up to 1130 Mhz, but I dont know **** about overclocking
Where to start first and what to do after, I don't know nothing can you please help me.

1130mhz is not that hard to get up and running but very hard to stabilize your better of using the 8.5 ratio + high fsb or go for the pc 9600

8.5 + 500fsb is a nice oc 4.25ghz w/ the ram at 1000mhz

Hello all,
My first post here, I think.

I'm out of ideas and patience with my gear. Three months ago, I finally managed to splash out and buy a Q9650 with the express intent of overclocking it to 4GHz or slightly more. But after countless weekends since, searching forums and trying different options, the best "stable" OC I can manage is 3.91Ghz. I can run it at 3.96GHz, but OCCT dumps it. OCCT likes 3.91GHz better.
I posted a similar request for help on OCZ's forums three weeks ago, but plenty of views and no comments. (I'm a little disappointed with OCZ now.)

I've also tried underclocking my RAM with the divider in order to get the FSB to 9*450 and thus a clock of 4.05GHz, but the BIOS won't have it.

I've seen lots of people posting very impressive figures here with seemingly "lesser" spec RAM and Mobos. So, I ask you - my fellow Q9650 overclockers - have I got rubbish RAM or an iffy Mobo? Or is it a bad combination?
I don't mind if you want to tell me to dump any of it, since my feeling at this stage is that it'll be well deserved. However, I'd rather see if anybody can help with suggestions in the BIOS settings.

Well, I am not familiar with your board,but I have done a fair amount of fiddling with Q9650 on my UD3P. Here are a few things from my files that amy help you on your board,but first you will need to underclock the RAM until you get the CPU overclock sorted

******Motherboard Voltage Control******

Load-Line Calibration: disabled (can be used if volt drop is to big at higher core speed. (I always use LLC when overclocked)

CPU Vcore: The voltage applied to CPU @ varying speeds in order to achieve stability

CPU Termination: 1.20 aka "FSB voltage", keeps your system stable at a certain bus speed, higher bus, higher CPU Term

CPU PLL: 1.50 (it helps you to boot into OS, higher bus speed, higher CPU PLL) 1.50 is good enough up to 450 FSB with a quad

CPU Reference: 0.760 (aka CPU GTL Ref, set this value when CPU Term is at 1,20 because it changes/scales with the CPU Term, this one is a bit tough to explain but in short, this one helps to have the CPU stable when increasing bus speed)

MCH Core: 1.20 -1.30 (aka NB voltage, this P45 setting is a bit sensitive, both too low or too high and it will not boot)

MCH Reference: (0.840?) (aka NB GTL Ref, set this value when CPU Term is at 1.20 because it changes/scales with the CPU Term, this one is a bit tough to explain but in short, this one helps to have the NB stable when increasing bus speed, this one is also a bit sensitive, one step up or down should be fine though)

MCH/DRAM Reference: Auto (reference between NB and ram, best set to auto) I use normal

ICH I/O: 1.50 (aka SB bus voltage, one or two steps up if you run raid or many HD)

ICH Core: 1.10 (aka SB core voltage, one or two steps up if you run raid or many HD)

DRAM Voltage: You know what to set for your ram

DRAM Termination: auto (termination voltage for the ram) I use normal

Channel A Ref: auto (reference voltage for ram slots A) I use normal

Channel B Ref: auto (reference voltage for ram slots A) I use normal


For what it is worth, here are my views on voltage adjustments for V-core ,Term and MCH

When going for high clocks there is a "relationship" between V-core and CPU Term that should be maintained for the sake of stability. At a clock of say 3.6 the voltage difference between V-core and Term should be about 0.02v lower for Term. At 4.0 that difference grows to about 0.03v,as you will be raising the V-core the higher you go, but the Term does not get raised an eaual amount. If raised equally you would eventually be too high on Term for safety.


Continuing on, lets say you have moved up to 4.1Ghz testing. You will most likely need a pretty good V-core increase. I won't attempt to plug in a # for your chip. But let's say for instance you need 1.375v-core for whatever speed you are trying to stableize. Your Term should then be somewhere between .030v and .040v lower that V-core voltage. The 1.340v would be a good choice.

The voltage ratio between Core and Term is necessary for a stable clock. It is necessary to note that as you attain higher clocks, that voltage ratio usually widens just a bit.

Now for MCH---once you pass 400 FSB your chip needs more MCH for the RAM portion of the overclock to communicate properly with the CPU. The MCH between 400FSB and 500 FSB is generally from 1.24 to 1.32. I don't think you will ever need to exceed 1.32/1.34v in MCH

I select "normal" over "auto" if not plugging in a # for everything else

Hey, dennyb.
Thanks for all that. Quite a lot to digest and I will take some time to go over it.
Inspired by your post, I took a fair bit of time yesterday to actually go back to basics again and work out how to underclock my RAM.
I have some bad news - now, even at stock settings, OCCT hangs or fails my system before long with an "Error on Core 0" or 1 or 2. The longest run was 7 minutes. Looking at the diagrams it throws out, I see that my 12V rails are highly unstable.
Firing up CPUID's Hardware Monitor seems to confirm that with a variance of about 79%!! That's on the ITE IT87 Sensor. Looking up what that is and where it is, my reasoning now tells me that I actually have a buggered mobo. Am I right?

Ah, well. Maybe I should just go back to a DDR2 mobo and RAM like I had before. The GA-EP45-x range seems good but they are getting hard to come by now that the i-3/5/7/9 series CPU's are taking hold of the market.

Well my H50 has had a couple weeks for the thermal paste to settle, so I decided to start overclocking. Current up to 4.0ghz without any problems. Will try higher later. I ran Prime95 for at least 20minutes on all these clocks and the Crysis benchmark because really, why do I want to OC? More fps...

Ill only post a couple here since I dont have any benches at 3.0ghz.






Conclusion
My GPU is definitely holding me back now. So I will be getting a 5850 soon I think.
