[Official] Cooler Master ATCS 840 Owners Club - Page 191

Bought the H50 for 25 bucks and put it in last night. Removed the stock paste and slapped on some OCZ Freeze.
Did some OC'ing yesterday. Here are my settings and temps.

CPU Ratio: 21X
BCLK: 180
Memory Multi: x8
DRAM Timings: 8-8-8-24 CMD Rate: 2
Voltages:
vCore: 1.34375
QPI/VTT: 1.395
IOH Core: 1.30
DRAM: 1.60

Above settings were 7 hr Linx stable with problem size 25000. I felt the temps were a lil high for that OC. Any attempt to OC above than this shoots up temps to 85 and above.
Pics attached.

Do you guys feel that the above voltages are on the high side? Any suggestions on tightening them to get the temps down.
I used the "3 step guide to OC'ing' found at overclockers.com. I liked the approach the article was based on to get a stable OC. Are there any better ways to do this.

Thanks

Those temps are pretty high. How did you apply the thermal paste? Was your H50 and CPU/socket cleaned properly before the TIM application?

I felt so too. I have cleaned both surfaces with Arcticlean 1 & 2. Applied a BB size on the cpu surface and installed the H50 with push-pull fans on the radiator..

feeds my rad thats poking into the drive bays, yes there is a fan going in along with the 2 for the hdd bay and they do have dust filters but its always a losing battle here in AZ. Aside form all that they simply look great compared to the ones that come with the case.

I think you might benefit from doing some homework. I suspect taht for the BCLK you are using you won't need such a high Vcore. An i7 900 guy was marveling at how us i7 800 guys have to be careful with our Vtt's; he said that trading Vtt for Vcore allows i7 900 OCers to keep their Vocres down, and thus keep their temps down.

Because I don't have that chip I didn't bookmark the comment, but I think if you Googled around and searched some threads you would find the numbers you need.

Well it's different from chip to chip really. Maybe he has a rather bad one and that's the lowest he can go, or he just hasn't tried lower. I'd say for 3.9GHz you should try more around 1.28v, but it's trail and error really.

I got to these settings for this OC via an iterative method as described in the overclocking guide I was referring.
I wasn't intending to go beyond 180 for the BCLK at this point.
As explained in the guide, I started by setting the multiplier to 12X & gradually incrementing the BCLK towards 180 and adjusting the Vtt to work with that BCLK. I did have plenty of BSODs in the process. Once I got my BCLK and Vtt fixed, I started raising the multiplier and adjusting the vCore accordingly to reach these settings. I thought I had done my homework
I haven't tinkered with the RAM timings as yet by the way. Running them at default settings except for the DRAM voltage.
I will try tweaking these a lil bit when I get some time today and tomorrow.
