It's easy to trace and - if necessary - replace cabling or components. Flexible component placement. You'll love the build when you get to it. This case is a keeper, since you can't buy new anymore.

As an example, I just had a PATA HDD on another computer disappear. Yup. I was copying files from it in the AM. When I got back PM it wasn't visible anymore. Did all the "right" things to reset, recover, reconfigure. Nothing worked. HDD was spinning up. Computer would not see it anymore. So I took it out of the enclosure and moved it over the the 840. MOBO was in part chosen because it has an IDE/PATA connector. Powered down, hooked up the PATA drive, and there are all the files. So while this was really a MOBO featrure, this wide open case made it really easy to connect the PATA ribbon cable and the molex power connector.

The flat ribbon PATA cable is both hard to route and too short to reach the 3.5" lower drive bays in the ATCS-840. HDDs standing on the table, propped up with whatever is at hand, cables coming out from the open case set-up got the data accessible and 90% of what I wanted (a bunch is clutter I don't want to come along with a complete clone of the drives) transferred to a SATA drive. But that last 10% is going to take some time to identify and copy.

Not beautiful, but not ghetto mod either. Fabricated from a 1"x1" aluminum angle (attached to floor of case), a piece of thin (1/16"?) aluminum plate, and a small aluminum angle to stiffen the plate (three center screws in photo). All cut from what happened to be in the scrap pile. Some machine screws and nuts from the store. It's not as rigid as I'd like. The flex is actually in the floor of the case, not the fabricated mount. The floor is very thin and I did not add any reinforcement underneath, because I wanted to keep the lower intake fan screen accessible there. The angle is wider than the plate so that the mounting screws are out on each side of the screen. For semi-temporary it will be fine. The HDDs are stable and easily cabled, and the side cover can be installed to keep the birds from nesting in there.

Coming back to your earlier post about case feet and airflow. I THINK we were talking about amount of airflow, maybe reflected in lower temps.

I've had the case open for a number of reasons, and running it open. With all fans running (except the rear GPU duct which is uninstalled for the moment) I began noticing it was noisy. So I left front intake and top exhaust rear 230mm fans and 140mm Noctua rear case exhaust running. Others off. Much quieter. Turned on CPU push 120mm Noctua, still pretty quiet. Turned it off and ran top front 230mm exhaust, still pretty quiet. Turned it off and ran 140mm Noctua bottom intake. Noticeably noisy. (All these running max RPM through Scythe controller.)

So the obvious question, to me anyway, is if the restricted airspace (OK it's not over Area 51... let's say constricted airspace) under the case is the cause of the noise. Has anyone noticed less noise with the case up on feet?

I do have two 3.5" HDDs installed above that fan inside the case (see photo just above) so that's another possibility.

Case Picture (Click to show)

Looking at your picture now, I notice how little space there is between the bottom of your case and the table. It almost looks like it's touching. I'm surprised, since the ATCS 840 comes with feet that should give you at least 1/4" if not 1/2" space under your case. Does yours not have any feet? They should look like these:

The feet I use on my Stacker are from MNPCtech and look like this:

I got these feet because the Stacker comes with no feet at all, just one large pad, and I wanted extra room under the case for my radiator mod.

Doesn't the ATCS 840 also come with casters as an option? I'd have to go check under mine, but I seem to remember having a box with 4 casters that came with the case as well as 4 threaded holes under each corner where the casters could be screwed in to the floor of the case. Casters would for sure raise your case way up.

It sounds like your fan might be struggling since it has a lot of resistance on the intake side. I know some fan bearings will produce a lot of noise when dealing with a lot of intake resistance. I have the same problem on my CPU heatsink with a push/pull fan setup. The push fan works fine, but the pull fan on the back of the heatsink starts making a whining noise as soon as I speed up the fan over 800 RPM. That could be the same problem you're having. Have you tried lifting the case onto a couple of books or something to see if the noise of your Noctua changes at all with a bigger gap under your case?

Thanks FloofyFox.

Yes my case came with the stock feet you picture. I measure 9/16" from table top to bottom of case (perspective is poor in that picture of my case). But there are some thin pads under the feet to protect the table, so say the design clearance under case is 1/2". BUT the filter screen holder is under the case, not in the case, like the PSU filter. So lucky if there is 1/4" under that. And maybe it is sucking the table cloth up to it. The noise is an air rush noise not a bearing noise. The Noctuas are mechanically quiet at all RPMs.

Those taller feet from MNPCTech look great, thanks for that lead.

No casters came with my case. The front, steel, reinforcing bar (the one I can see) has five (5) holes. 1 threaded for foot. 2 threaded empty. 2 look like rivets holding bar to case. Doesn't look like the hole pattern matches the caster plate holes.

As I posted earlier, ultimately I think I'll build a rolling caddy for one or two computers and have ample cut out in floor for airflow to PSU and case intake. Till then I'll try to get those MNPCTech feet.

Well I finally got into the shop and cut four (4) 3/4" thick wood blocks. Put one under each foot of the ATCS-840. So there is => 1" clearance under the screen frame for the intake fan. At 1,000rpm I can hear the Noctua NF-P14 FLX 140mm fan but it does not add to noise from other fans. At >1,300 rpm it's noisy. Took filter screen out so there is just the honeycomb grill, no difference.

I looked at the box. FLX has 3 speed settings based on adapter cables: 1,200, 900, and 750 rpm. But I have it attached (with no low speed adapter) to the Scythe Kaze Master fan controller which apparently can run the voltage up to give >100rpm higher than top design spec. Once I figured that out I went through different speeds. @750 quiet, @900 quiet, @1,000 less quiet, @1,200 a bit less quiet but not horrible. From 1,200 on up noisy and really noisy at 1,320. But it wasn't designed for that. Could be blade noise. And I have the case open. It would probably be muffled at least a little with case closed.

Same fan on rear case exhaust is quiet, but is straight to mobo. I can't tell w/o pulling it apart and going through two fan boxes if it has a speed adapter cable or just an extension cable on it. But I suspect it is running below 1,200 rpm.

So there is an answer.

Hey, cool.

A friend of mine built himself a small frame out of aluminum angle irons and mounted it on casters for when he wanted to bring his PC places. It would help keep the case off the dirty floors and he could roll it around for transport. Too bad he never posted a picture of it, but you made me think of it.

Anyway, happy building.   thumb.gif

I'm comfortable enough working with aluminum. But the material is more expensive and it's more exacting work, cutting and drilling. I'll probably build out of wood, make it look like furniture. I have a table saw, drill presses, sanders, router. Or look at off the shelf Ikea-ish stuff I can mod. Still I should probably cost it out both ways.

The main goal is once I set up a proper computer work area and get off the DR table, that I can roll the computers out to access cabling. I'm done with rolling around on the floor under the desk with a flashlight!

This is what FloofyFox was talking about

It's a little crude but it works great and is very strong, I'll usually put my PC on it held down with zip ties so I can pick it up and not have the caddy fall off and then stack my monitor and all my gear on top of that. I also made it strong enough to stand on just because. I think it cost me about $40 in material when I built this thing years ago, the aluminum wasn't even that expensive and a joy to work with, it cuts and drills really easily but is still rather strong. I had planned to go back and grind down the hardware to make it look better but it wasn't needed and I got lazy, I still might go back and do this one day but if ever I get a different case I'll be able to take it apart easily enough as it is and reuse all the hardware, except the rivets obviously.

Here's a picture of my case on it at a Lan, I don't have that many unfortunately and don't feel like unplugging it just for a better picture, but you can get an idea at least.

Obviously you'll need to tailor make your own to fit your chassis but this should give you an idea, be sure to make it wide for added stability, but this was a necessity due to the feet design of my case.

Thanks! Pictures are very clear. Very sturdy construction. I like the substantial casters.

I'm thinking that since I use the top panel a lot, and have optical drive, three hot swap HDDs, fan controller and card reader on front of case, I'll want the tower case sitting higher so I don't have to bend down to access all that stuff. Then your advice about width for stability becomes even more important. I might make it wide enough for the second (XP-W7 dual boot) computer to sit alongside it.

UPS, external drive enclosures, or router (in some combination) could be underneath the computers.

I was at the hardware store and checking prices for the aluminum I used, it's about 10$ for a 4 foot length and I used at least 4 pieces. The casters I have no idea where I got them but I felt getting something a little beefier would be a good idea, they must of been about 5$ a pieces. So grand total with hardware would be closer to $70, but I can use this dolly for other things, not that I ever have but it's nice to have the option.

Also I noticed some heavier gauge channel which got me thinking about your idea of building a rack on wheels, could make something really strong and custom that would suit your needs really well. Even use bigger casters, locking casters, lots of possibilities when your making it yourself.

Just be sure to take pictures and post them.

Good luck
