I've just finished building an i7 3930K setup for someone (studio setup, it'll be used for
After Effects), settled on 4.7GHz:

Note that it's maxed out with 64GB RAM @ 2133. I've not yet seen anyone else post a setup
like this, ie. a good clock but with max/fast RAM.

Also worth mentioning that at 4.8 the system passed all the usual benchmarks & stress tests
ok (including an hour of P95 with 1344/1792 FFTs), but it wasn't "stable" for AE which is a
real workload that hammers multiple aspects of the system; it produced things such as
banding artifacts on the display in the main AE window, an occasional AE crash when
switching from Classic 3D to Ray Traced 3D mode, etc., though never an actual BSOD. Proves
to me there's a world of difference between normal oc's for bragging rights and playing
games, and a system that's genuinely stable for a real application; by stable I mean not
just something that won't crash, but also a config that's not giving transient errors
behind the scenes which one would never notice in a game because they don't matter (pixel
errors in studio work are unacceptable).

Dropping the clock to 4.7 made the artifacts go away, no more odd behaviour, working fine.
I'm sure I could have gotten it fully ok at 4.8 (or 5+ with better cooling) with more
tweaking, but I only had 2 days to sort it all out.

The rest of the system was an ASUS P9X79 WS, Quadro 4000, two 800MHz GTX 460s for CUDA, 2x
Samsung 830 256GB SSDs (one is the system drive, the other is for the AE cache), 2x 2TB
Enterprise SATA in RAID1, 2TB Enterprise SATA for main work area (tests showed RAID speed
wasn't needed), huge Phanteks air cooler, HAF 932 case, 1kW PSU, etc. Have to say I'm
really very impressed with the ASUS board, it was staggeringly easy to sort out the oc. Not
a single BSOD during the whole oc process.

The voltages are almost certainly higher than they need to be, but without the time to
tweak, it doesn't matter, P95 load temps were under 76C (22 ambient) and it's all setup
using Offset mode; besides, AE never hits cores that hard (CUDA power is much more
important). Vcore was about 1.37 in BIOS I think.

Anyway, the system is 300km away now, so I can't do any more with it. Thus, I'm building a
replica for myself, virtually the same parts, except with a 1200W PSU so that I can
comfortably experiment with 3 x GTX 460 for CUDA, see what difference it makes vs. 2 cards
(GPU-Z did show all 3 cards being used during GPU accelerated rendering). If anyone's
interested though, what I'll do is ask the studio guy to send me the BIOS profile, post the
settings here when I have my own unit running. I spent quite a lot of time beforehand
wading through the ASUS forums and elsewhere, looking for info specific to X79 oc'ing when
one has max RAM. I guess that effort was worthwhile.

IIRC the system's CB 11.5 score was 13.89.

I tried for a 5.0ghz but my chip seemed to fry, I could barely run 4.9ghz at 1.496v !

What cooler are you using?

Don't think I'd risk as high as 1.496...


Does anyone here have a 2600K or 2700K running at 5.0? What vcore/vccsa/etc. are you using? I've had a 2700K running
at 5.0 for a while. Always thought it was stable but apparently not quite - freezes when running 3DMark Firestrike Physics test.

Please share your volts with me! smile.gif I use the XSPC Raystorm high performance acetal cpu block, I really wanted to see my machine running at 5.0 and what temps but I honestly don't think I have a good 2600k

Ok, here are my settings. A number of settings are still on Auto, so I expect the
CPU has some headroom, but I'm happy with 5.0. I haven't tried tweaking the RAM
at all; maybe the board can handle 32GB @ 2400 ok, I don't know, but 2133 is fine.

Dec/2013 update: a similar build I constructed recently achieved greater stability by setting PCH Voltage and PCH PLL Voltage to Auto.

A note on the fans: nowadays I only use Nanoxia Deep Silence PWM. The above config was done with Coolermaster Bladermaster fans because at the time I hadn't yet discovered NDS. I could replace them I suppose, but it's not my main gaming PC so the higher noise from the CMs doesn't matter (it's perfectly quiet at idle, but the CM fans are a bit loud under load - unlike the NDS fans which are much quieter under load). Thus, the standard cooling config I use now is an H80 + 2x NDS PWM for a normal case, or H100/H110 for larger cases.

Quick update - turns out the issue I had with 3DMark 2013 crashing was due to the High Precision Event Timer (HPET)
being disabled. Read about it elsewhere; turned it on, the benchmark runs fine. I guess the oc must be ok afterall. 8)

I came across this thread while debating whether to upgrade my hardware, or see if I could overclock my old hardware further and gain some more life out of it. I used to be a fairly hard core overclocker in the past, however my interests have changed somewhat, and I haven't done any for some time. My system is an old (years old, C0 stepping) i7 920 system with some of the first GSkill memory to hit the market. It's a higher voltage CPU, and takes a lot of juice to get going. I used to run it around 1.35v at 3.6-3.8Ghz. I also ran the GSkill memory slower than its rated setting, as back when I first built the system it was the very early days of Intel's integrated memory controller, and it wasn't widely known how far you could push DRAM voltage.

Well, after reading this thread, I decided to see how far I could push my system. When I originally built it, I put together a custom watercooling system using Koolance parts, including the special custom motherboard and vreg waterblocks for the Rampage II Extreme. The entire setup is liquid cooled, with the exception of my video card (too much of a hassle, as it is the one physical piece of hardware I've regularly upgraded over the years). The system hardware is as follows:

ASUS Rampage II Extreme
Intel Core i7 920 (C0 stepping)
12GB GSkill DDR3-1600 (Triple Channel)
EVGA GeForce GTX 660
Antec Dual PSU 1200watt (550Watt + 650Watt)

My current most stable overclock (150 iterations of LinX at a problem size of 30,000, which seems to better stress the CPU than the default 10,000 problem size) is validated here:

i7 920 @ 4355.37 MHz (207.4 * 21) @ 1.4625vcore w/ 800mv differential amp.


Rock solid stable, lowest vcore I can go and maintain speed and stability. CPU temp under load ~60°C, core temps under load range from 63-72°C. CPUID shows that full long-duration heavy load vcore moves as high as 1.501v. Under normal use vcore stays around 1.45-1.47v (quite happy with these voltages).

My highest mostly-stable overclock (it fails almost immediately when I run the OCCT stress test, not the Linpack one but the OCCT one) is validated here:

i7 920 @ 4416.65 MHz (210.32 * 21) @ 1.495vcore w/ 900mv differential amp.


Largely stable. Handles a 50 iteration run of LinX fine. Handles OCCT's power load test fine. Fails immediately whenever I try to run the OCCT native test (first tab) every time. Not sure what that test is doing, but it pushes the CPU harder than anything I know of.

CPU temp under load ~65°C, core temps under load range from 69-78°C. Additionally, CPUID shows that full long-duration heavy load vcore moves as high as 1.528v, which is rather worrisome. I have not yet tried to work down the voltage on this overclock yet, as it is not yet stable. I also suspect my memory is not the greatest overclocker. I had to loosen timings a bit in my first stable overclock...I suspect I may have to loosen them even more for this overclock.

Well, anyway. Guess this officially makes me a member of the 4Ghz club? thumb.gif First time I've submitted any information about my overclocks in a LONG time. It feels good to get such a significant overclock out of really old (almost ancient in this world) hardware. I'm quite happy with 4.35Ghz, but there is always that goal to reach a personal record...I'd love to see if I could achieve 4.5Ghz at some point (however I suspect that would require a new set of memory, maybe some clock skew fine-tuning (ugh), or a serious memory underclock...and some insane voltage and a TEC.)
