Question about new i7 build

Thread Starter
Well, this build is for a customer, he asked me to build a gaming rig with the best hardware available, money is no problem, he said. I'm planning to buy some of the things i'll need but first, I need your opinion, so far I have chosen the following:

Intel Core i7 965 Nehalem 3.2GHz $1020

2x CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 TR3X6G1866C9D $818

2x WD VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATAII Hard Drive RAID0 $460

4x SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive $400

3x BFG Tech BFGEGTX2801024H2OWE GeForce GTX 280 1GB in TRI-SLI $1500

(Or, 2x DIAMOND 4870X2PE52GXOC Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB in Crossfire $1010)

ASUS Rampage II Extreme LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard $399

COOLER MASTER Real Power Pro RS-C50-EMBA-D2 1250W $330

COOLER MASTER cosmos S RC-1100-KKN1-GP Black Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case $250

Swiftech Apogee™ GTZ water-block w/Apogee-GTZ-Ci7 $80

Swiftech MCP655 12 VDC Pump Liquid Cooling System $75

Swiftech MCR320-QP Quiet Power radiator $50

LG Super Multi Blu-ray Disc Burner & HD DVD-ROM Drive Black SATA Model GGW-H20L $250

SAMSUNG Black Burner with LightScribe TS-H653N $23 $26.00

SABRENT CRW-UINB 52-in-1 USB 2.0 Internal Card Reader w/ USB 2.0 Port $14

Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 Media Center Kit Dual TV Tuner 1213 $140

The problem is the motherboard, because I need one with the best overclocking performance but, I also need it to have at least 2 PCI-e x1 (or x4) for a sound card and the TV tuner (which MUST be there)

So, if I choose the Asus Rampage Extreme II, i'll have to use watercooled GPU's which might not be a very good option...

I found these motherboards:

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-EXTREME
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128361

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128361

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 LGA
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128362

Those motherboards fit my needs except on overclocking, I don't know what's their real performance when it comes to taking the i7 to it's OC limits...

Because I'm planning to overclock it to 3.8GHZ or maybe 4GHZ, which motherboard would be the best to overclock the CPU?

And, which setup would be the best? Tri-SLI (3x GTX280) or Quad Crossfire (2x HD4870x2)?

Hmm this seems a bit on the ridiculous side im quite sure that if a "client" came up to me and asked for the ultimate gaming rig id watercool a 920 and slap 2 260 Core 216's onto it, unless your running 2 30" monitors and your playing a real life sims there is no way that your gonna need a rig like that. Sure a rig like that would be fun to build but i can see it being extremely problematic. Best of wishes to you though!! *JaKe*

I don't think you can do 3 or them. Isn't there only support at the moment for quad sli (2x295's) running together?

Gasp!! Your rig is extremely comparable to mine, man only 3.2GHz?? Dude you have a QX6700, i would have overclocked the balls out of that.. No no i kid, those quads are really hot even with the TRUE on it.. Not to steal the thread from anyone else *JaKe*

lol it's okay, dont worry

anyway, back to the thread I just took a look to the GTX 295 and it looks good but, how good is it compared to the HD4870X2 (also quad-SLI vs. quad-CF) and one more thing, related to what you posted, let's compare the 920 and the 965, both overclcoked to 3.8GHZ... which one would be the best? and why do you say it would be problematic?

your right, in that case I would go for 2xGTX295's becuase they have double the shader power of a GTX280 and is substancially faster than the 4870x2

From what I understand the GTX295 is faster than the 4870x2, so it should be faster in quad SLi theoredically. Both setups would be awsome but I would opt for the 295's becuase of thier insain shader's

now, what about the motherboard? another thing I was thinking about is the RAM, how good is the ram i chose?
