Maybe you just have a different playing style, and that's fine...
But I've got a little tip for you if you want to make sure this never happens again. I assume your games usually involve a good deal of financial strife & general economic hardship, otherwise you would steamroll your enemies (i have finished full size games in the early 1300s with many turns left). I'll assume you usually play as european powers:
If you've got several large armies, then your treasury starts going negative, you need to get proactive. You need to minimally fortify the homeland, than take a nice big army on a raiding party in the middle east (bring siege weapons, 3 ships for transport). Take large, but ill fortified cities from the turks, egyptians, and byzantines but DON'T keep them. Slaughter the citizens, sell all the buildings, and abandon the city.
Move on and take another. Use the cash to invest in farms & trade at home. You will be a cancer
and nobody will stop you... but this is a favorite time for your enemies at home to attack your homeland so you'll have to bail at some point. Your will not be healing your army so plan accordingly & minimize casualties. Use your ships to stick and move.
A lot of times you can time your pillaging to coincide with a crusade, scoring you points at home!
