People talk about mods and what not.. I have never even played this game online only regular out of the box game play.
I never played it online either. The battles seem shallow without the campaign to coincide with them. Supposedly they are working on a multiplayer campaign. If it works that would just be incredible.
As far as Mods go, Stainless Steel is the best I've played so far for Medieval 2. Lands to conquer is pretty good (closer to the original game) but it uses default skins so you would have to mod the skins yourself.
Rome Total War has tons and tons of good mods. IMHO Rome was a better game. Like someone else already said, it has more to do with formations and feeding the front line a fresh supply of troops at a critical moment(of course you have to play a modded version because the vanilla likes to set the troops up in 1 huge straight line
) in stead of just headlong charges with heavy calvary.
Depending on what you like; Medieval for sieges, Rome for open plain battles.
