ATX Vs. Micro ATX??

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I was wondering if there is really any difference between the full size ATX and Micro. Other than really losing a PCI-E slot they're pretty much the same right? I mean like performance wise. Thanks.

It depends, obviously the cooling apparatus on a micro-atx is going to be less extreme, so you wont be able to push it as hard, but there are 1600 FSB m-atx mobo's out there.

You lose more like 2-3 expansion slots. They also generally aren't designed for overclocking so they have few voltage regulators. They also almost always have chipsets with integrated video which again aren't overclockers.
Once again...

you might get a little more heat generation since the components will be placed tighter together

So basically micro ATX won't be good in my budget gamer, thanks for the info. I thought I'd might be able to shave off about $30 by going with a 780V micro over the 790GX. I only need the 2 memory slots for 2X2gb 1066 ram, 7750BE, 1 HD, and a 4870 or GTX 260, if I get 2 PCI-E slots then I'd go with 2 4830's in XF. I don't ever intend to upgrade from this for at least a year or 2, then I'd just sell it and build another. So basically I'm not looking for expansion room, but I am looking at a tight budget.

MicroATX is good for budget builds

They're just generally not good for overclocking and tend to have less features than ATX boards

I'd still go with the 790GX though. Much better chipset than 780V
