I'm running my pfSense on an old EVGA P55 Micro board with an PCI Realtek NIC.
The onboard is a gigabit Marvell Yukon 88E8057 running the LAN side, and on the WAN side, I have just a 100 Mbit Realtek RTL8139/810x NIC since my incoming internet is limited to 50/30 and I haven't had any issues yet in the couple months I've been running it in a house of 4 gamers with over a dozen internet connected devices.
So as long as the NIC is recognized, you should have no issues for home or even small business use. If you are running critical applications that need 100 uptime, then running pfSense on an old Xeon server board with Intel NIC's would be the way to go form what I've seen in guides scattered around the net.
