I'm running my pfSense on an old EVGA P55 Micro board with an PCI Realtek NIC.

The onboard is a gigabit Marvell Yukon 88E8057 running the LAN side, and on the WAN side, I have just a 100 Mbit Realtek RTL8139/810x NIC since my incoming internet is limited to 50/30 and I haven't had any issues yet in the couple months I've been running it in a house of 4 gamers with over a dozen internet connected devices.

So as long as the NIC is recognized, you should have no issues for home or even small business use.  If you are running critical applications that need 100 uptime, then running pfSense on an old Xeon server board with Intel NIC's would be the way to go form what I've seen in guides scattered around the net.

i want to interject - lan can be and is more important then wan speeds depending on how you have your network setup.

for most home users it is a non matter.

but think before you act, pfsense assumes you know what you are doing in alot, including this

So I came across an old motherboard am2 sempron, micro atx, and 1gb ram. It has 10base Ethernet, but I was thinking of this dual port. Here
Would that be capable or just overkill in terms of 24/7 power consumption. I'm thinking 200w psu for it.

I would just feel better with gig speeds on wan and lan. It's like an ocd thing. I want pfsense mainly for VPN and ddns.

Side note: can I use pfsense to network share a USB hard drive. Like some new routers?

So I picked up a Dell PowerConnect 5524 managed switch for $25. My question to you PFSense gurus is if I set up the VLANs on the switch, do I need to mirror those settings on my PFSense box?

EDIT--

I found this website that explains how to set up the VLANs on both a switch and PFSense. Also the site has other great links for remote access with OpenVPN, static IPs in VLANs and much more. This site is going to be my best friend over the near future.

How To Create And Configure VLANs In pfSense

Theres no reason to run an SSD with PF sense....

other than it may be a little more quiet and draw slightly less power. There will be NO Performance increase in PF sense using a SSD vs HDD

The only benefit I have seen is decreased boot times. Aside from that, I completely agree.

Just curious, wouldn't there be a difference in speed if you were using the SDD as a squid cache?
