I used PfSense for over the last 4 years as my main router, I took a gamble and replaced my PfSense Install with untangled UTM. Largely for its Adblocking on router level. $50 a year for Home use with all the full fledged apps. More than most would like to pay, sure.
But the Router side of it is not my Favorite. Sure it works, and has all the features. I just liked PfSense a lot more as a router.
I've now installed a few Edge routers for Clients, and even in the new office at work. Gotta say the device blew me away for the cost. The Edgerouter X can pretty much do everything PfSense needed to do, without the need to have options scattered all over the pace. Now when it comes to anything too advanced, you pretty much have to use the CLI on the Edge router. PfSense has a GUI Option for every little detail. Anyone else have experience with these devices?
I'm thinking about replacing the Router side and leaving Untangled running in bridge mode. The Edge Router 4 is fresh on the market, and will most likely be on Amazon and other more popular sites in no time. Packing a much needed CPU improvement over the X, as QoS Performance tops out around 120-130mbps on that device. Is there a point in getting a PfSense Box anymore? I was thinking about picking up a small Atom Based Mini PC that people have been install PfSense on with good results, but the cost isn't far off from the Edge Router 4. And that is a proven product with proven performance. And not sure if those atom boxes will even meet PfSense requirements in a few years.
I have an ER-4
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Using it on 350 mbps cable, QoS is fine at this speed. The ER-6 should be the same, since it is pretty much the same hardware.
Not sure where it tops out though since i no longer have gigabit fiber to check it, but it at least has no probs at 350mbps....
I also have an ERL that one maxes out ~60 mbps with QoS,
Lastly I have a USG-PRO-4, it maxes out around ~250 mbs with QoS. I think it has pretty much the same hardware as the ERPRO-8.
I will say that I also have a mikrotik hexr3 and it is the same hardware as the ER-X and I think i got ~180 mbps on that with QoS.
Just a FYI, in case you were wondering about the rest of the lineup, that should give you an idea where the rest of them sit. I dont have a need for the XG, so cant give you any info on that one...
Not sure how I feel about EdgeOS vs Unifi, there are things I like about each. To be honest though if the USG-PRO was faster (and quieter) I would probably go back to Unifi just for the DPI, plus the rest of my stuff is Unifi. Oh well, hoping they update the USG/USG-PRO soon like they did the Edge lineup.Edited by the9quad - 12/12/17 at 5:37pm
