Media attention, gain a foothold on major marketing for computers. Sure they get lots of sales, but mostly from newegg, or tigerdirect, sites like that. While Dell sells more systems a year than they do, and they want in on Dell and others.

my frist computer back in 1996 or 97 was a AST Adventure w/ a AMD K5-150 that computer as old and slow as it was had some damn power behind it. and that hooked me on AMD. yes i looked at BOTH intel and amd and read up about everything and found AMD to be better. likewise i build the computer(2yo in feb2006) i have now with a AMD and am looking at when i can afford it a AMD 64 fx-57. so rock on AMD pound intel in the ground

AMD's got a few problems on their hands. First of all, Intel does have a monopoly. Any person/company given that kind of power WILL use it. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely". Second, they choose to cater to a market different from Intel's market. They build extremely powerful CPU's and don't take many shortcuts. They also are very good at keeping secrets and moving the market forward. Because of this, their market is limited to those of us who are "learned" in computers. In order to expand their market and begin taking stabs at intel on a competitive level, they will have to market to the rest of the world. Almost all of my friends have no interest in learning how computers work, thus the only spec that means anything to them is "Ghz". Similar to how RAM only matters if there's more of it. Intel switched to the cheap 6 thread processors in order to capture that market. AMD still competes with 9 thread processors. Most people don't know what that means, so when it comes down to a 3 Ghz Intel and a 2 Ghz AMD processor, people will choose the 3 because they think its faster. So, unless AMD begins catering to that market, or finds a way to educate the average person, they are stuck in a hole they put themselves in. If they want to compete with Intel to become top dog, then they will have to change the way they run their company.

If that happens, they will lose my personal support. I like running with the little company that's all about moving forward, not making lots of $$$. Hearing about this lawsuit is dissappointing and I know I will be torn apart by fellow AMD fans for saying I hope they don't win this fight. Let intel play catch-up with all their money rather than enjoy their profits while AMD continues to shake up the industry with all their new ideas and improvements.
