They run at slower clock speeds and use ECC ram. The reason they're so crazy is because of all the instruction sets and they also scale multiple processors together. It would do some basic things faster sure, but it's not as fast in desktop apps. It's hard to compare servers to desktops because they're not even built for what you're using it for.

Edit: And actually, can an Itanium even run windows? I just read up on this and you can read what I read. The Itanium2 doesn't support SSE,SSE2,etc so it wouldn't run windows. Also, if you compare the Itanium2 to the new Opterons, I believe the reviews I've heard were true......they're faster. Look at the numbers for bandwidth, etc. Here's the link......

The Itanium is not x86 so it wouldnt run Windows. It runs Linux I think. But yes the FX57 is the best gaming CPU for sure. But not the fastest at non gaming stuff.
Very nice!

Read this link and then come back here and say that........

If that link doesn't work, scroll down from this link and click on "AMD FX-57.. The fastest single core" and look at the benchmarks in nongaming. Here's the page....

I see no itanium comparisons in there , so sorry to say sccr, wrongage . The thing is you cant tottally compare an itanium to a desktop PC because it cant run windows, only linux, so theres no way there could be a fair comparison between the two, besides itaniums are used in super computers to transfer bigger data chunks through servers and do more FPCs per second, which is why theyre good for F@H or anything else.

What did you think about the comparison to the Opterons? Make sure you see the color codes at the bottom, also. I read his post wrong if he was referring to the Itanium. I'm sure it would do database stuff extremely fast, especially with SCSI raid and 8 gigs of ram.

Itanium and Itanium2 would do horrible at gaming cause there not meant to do that. But they are great for cruching numbers and data.
