So whats the deal? I've heard that reiserfs is faster with smaller files, and ext3 is just tried and true...I'm making a raid 0 array and am wondering which filesystem to use.

Is ext4 even mature enough to use right now?

Look through pages 3, 4 and 5.

ReiserFS is considered unstable by some people. I have been under ReiserFS more than two years, and the only thing I hate was that I had to reconstruct the whole filesystem structure in order to recover deleted files.
Even though I'm using it for long time, I still wouldn't recommend it to you.

Probably, ext3 is the most tested and stable of all FSs mentioned here.

I use Ext3, but I'm a Linux noob and the only flavors I've tried were all Ubuntu based. The easy setup guide on the disk said Ext3, so that's what I used.

Here's another vote for ext3. I've heard Reiserfs is hell at times, and I see no immediate reason to move to ext4 so soon... ext3 is widely used and I've personally have had no problems with it whatsoever..

Whatever you do, don't do an LVM partitioning layout. I accidently let Fedora use LVM my first time installing.. Never again. As a dual boot user, LVM made it impossible for me to access my ext3 partitions in Windows. Aside from that, in Fedora Core 6, I couldn't resize the LVM partition because FC6's built in tool would crash immediately on launch. LVM may work for others and they may have no problems.. But it was a bad enough experience for me to not recommend it at all.

Use ext3 until btrfs becomes stable in a year or two.

ext3, for the same reasons a IEATFISH

ext4 i would think IMHO is too new... i mean if they are only making it mainstream now... i think it is better to have reliablity in a drive array

ReiserFS ate a whole bunch of my files once. I'll never use it again.

And LVM is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Not using it is a REALLY BAD IDEA on many levels. If you have to share data between Windows and Linux, use a USB stick or an NTFS partition.

unlucky

I use EXT3. I would use 4 but i can't be bothered and i have 3 working fine.

I think you should use Ext4 after all, it's faster, and I didn't have any trouble with it even before it became mainstream. I'd say it's ready.

very few distro's at this point support ext 4, he would have to build his own kernel to enable ext 4. i would say ext 3, the benifets to ext4 aren't realized yet and it is to new to risk your valuable data to in a array.
