it sounds like it is starving for power...

sadly to my knowledge... the 285 didn't support voltage control

she idles at 31c too.
Strong bump.

Anyways gona have a couple more 285s to play with soon Hopefully at least one will match my current 285, crossing fingers.

OKay, so gentlemen.

Shader Clock and Memory Clock, which one gives the best benefit?

And should you not crank both up? As in, up one and drop the other for stability?

i got my XFX GTX285 BE today and did some testing and im really amazed about the performance i gained from my 9800GTX

after some stability and artifact testing (its a 2nd hand card) i wanted to know what kind of headroom this card has for overclocking. so i run GPUTool and it instant freezes my pc when any of the clocks increase...

at the stock clocks there are no artifacts and no performance problems so what could be the problem here? might it have something to do with the bios thats on the card? o_O

I haven't pushed mine to the limit for stability concerns, however I did push it higher than stock due to a number of performance issues. I did not however do this until upgrading from the stock piece of crap xfx stock cooler and I cannot stress the importance of that enough... it's trash IMO. I replaced it with http://www.ebay.com/itm/270842147783?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I went from 45c idle to 35c idle and from 81c under load to 48c under load, both at 100 percent fan in the case of both coolers.

647 was the initial core clock setting, shader for whatever reason was set at 1594. After folding tests continuously causing dramatic slowdowns of all other background applications including simple things such as explorer windows to the hd, and folding/other games using 98 percent gpu ..... I decided to try a few things. Last experiment involved raising the core to 700 while reducing the shader clock to 1550. Immediately upon reducing the shader, the gpu usage of folding dropped to 68 percent and held. The issues above were cut down to 1/3rd the impact. This leads me to believe that 1594 is too high for the shader clock.

the OC to 700/1550 did not result in even a 1c temperature increase.

I see this thread has been unused in a long while but, I just upgraded my cooling system and have successfully, at least at this point, overclocked my 2 GTX 285's to 725mhz core and 1350mhz mem. Don't really know if that's good or not, never overclocked before.

All the 200 series cards I have clock to around 700 on the core, 1458 shaders.

Did the conducting ink mod to a BFG GTX 285 OCX that could hit 783 core at stock volts. Gained nothing on the core by going to 1.25-1.26V but gained approx 100Mhz on shaders, 1620-1692. I think 1728 on shaders can be stable but requires lower temps, something that the stock cooler can't provide. Memory didnt budge, 1460 -> 1460.
